How will IP camera work?

Postby yugo23 » Mon Nov 01, 2010 12:02 am

Everything about Amahi sounds great, but I have just one concern. Since my server will be the only computer in the house running 24/7 I thought it will be perfect to also run IP camera software. I have not purchased any camera yet, but I suppose they will come with Windows based software. Is there any way to make it work, or are there some alternatives that can work with Amahi?

Two ways:

WINE - Lets you run a number of Win apps on Linux. Programs that don't have specialized drivers or demanding timings work well i WINE. I would suspect that a program that connects to an IP camera would fit within the parameters of WINE.

XEN - the Linux VM environment. Run a full Win virtual system on your Linux system. A number of developers here use this to test out their Amahi development, but that is Linux VMs on Linux, but all the same...

Bottom line, you will be able to get a Win app running on your Amahi system. It will be a bit more work than just building an XP or Vista system that runs 24/7, but you will get more for your efforts.

We have an app that is in Alpha, still being worked. It is called Zoneminder and might meet your needs. See https://www.amahi.org/apps/zoneminder for a description. There is also a link to the home page of the software for you to see what cameras are compatible.
