Historically, how quickly do apps come out of beta?

So first of all, let me say: I get it. Amahi is created by volunteers, and (so far so good) I love it! Please don't interpret my question as asking for a schedule.

However, being new here... I'm not sure how to interpret that an app is in "beta." The reason I'm asking is Crashplan specifically. I use it to back up my Windows machines and as a simple way to get backed-up data off-site. I'd love to pull it over to my new HDA!

From my limited understanding of how Amahi works, I always have the option of sshing into the hda (I'm running it headless) and treating it just like a Fedora box, installing Crashplan like I would any other Fedora box. However, if it's not going to be all that long for Crashplan to be supported by Amahi, just installing it directly through Amahi seems safer/simpler/ultimately better.

So: what's generally (in the past) been the rate at which an app becomes supported by Amahi? Do some move through faster than others? Another cool app I have always wanted to play with is ZoneMinder. Looks like that has been "alpha" for a long time. Is it the case that individual apps essentially need volunteer developer-champions to move them through the process?

Sorry if these questions don't quite make sense to the way Amahi is actually developed - I have really enjoyed the out-of-the-box VPN functionality, so I am already sold!

Here is the situation.

The faster we move the apps, the more swamped the team becomes, the less progress is made with the platform.

What we need is a system, perhaps people powered to manage all this, yet somehow keep the development team sane.

Different apps move at different speeds, depending on the packager's their motivation and the demand for the app.

That, and also we are working on a testing program to automatically test these apps. This takes time, effort and money to keep things rolling.

So, we need a Tester program manager! Someone with ideas, willingness to both lead and work as necessary to make it a successful program!

Definitely we would like to move apps faster and let everyone test more and more, but we have to be careful not to get drowned in the process!

Hey! Crashplan came out! And I have to say, that seemed pretty quick (although I recognize I shouldn't infer that means most apps come out of beta quickly).

However, this is a great opportunity for me to ask a question and learn a little more about the way Amahi works: since I didn't know when Crasplan would be released for Amahi, I went and installed it myself on my Amahi box last month. And it's working great!

So now that Amahi has released it, should I uninstall it and reinstall it through Amahi? Is there any difference / advantage to doing that?

Thanks - although it might seem like a weird question, the answer will help me understand better how Amahi "works." (It's pretty unlikely I would uninstall what I have since I'm a big believer in "if it ain't broke don't fix it," but understanding the answer to the question above will indirectly answer some questions I have about Amahi in general).

Depends....crashplan has been been in beta for a while. We are working on a release schedule, but sometimes that is overcome by bugs and other things.

I would not be able to give you a hard fast date for apps. As for uninstalling beta, reinstalling live app. The only advantage would be if there was something changed with the app. In this case, probably very little. I always uninstall beta apps, then reinstall the live app to be sure.

Oh whoops - sorry I wasn't more clear. I did not install the beta of the Amahi version - I just went and installed Crashplan directly. After all - as you guys like to say - it's my box!

So I'm looking to understand the differences between what I did and how the app would be if I uninstalled it and reinstalled it through Amahi.

Wow, now I'm really lost - maybe someone else can reply? It's not like this is urgent - I don't need a quick response, just someone to understand what I'm asking.

So you are saying I definitely *should* uninstall Crashplan from my box and then install it the Amahi way? What are the advantages? That's what I am trying to ask.

It is unlikely I will change anything - things are working well for me.

Sorry if I confused you. The way I understand it is you manually installed Crashplan and it works fine. So, given that I would not recommend you worry about using the Amahi version.

They are most likely the same and no sense in fixing what ain't broke. Now if you ever have to reinstall Fedora and Amahi, then it might be worth using the Amahi app. I would seriously doubt there is any difference between the two.

Thanks - it does! Sounds like Amahi-izing an app makes it really easy to install (but otherwise ends up the same on the box). Thank you for your help!
