Hello,

Not sure if we're all talking about the same thing.
1. Dashboard, Home screen
2. HDA screen [seen after clicking on HDA]
You know that the 'HDA' button is for searching whatever you type in the empty box beside it? If, for instance, you type 'Michael Bolton' in the box and click on the 'HDA' button, if it finds anything you should realize that you don't like music...
If you leave the box empty you get the screen you attached.

Maybe Amahi shouldn't show you the 'search results' page if you clicked the button while the searchbox is empty, I can't see why that would be useful.

just my 0.02cents

Nice Answer Man!
We didn't check the simplest thing, the search term!

it didn't even dawn on me that it might be a search box. Dohhh..!
Don' sweat it... :D. From your screenshots I see that on the theme you are using the page name 'search results' is missing (the page after you click on HDA). In the standard theme it is present and that gave me a clue, because, well, I hadn't realize it was a searchbox either
Now when I enter, say *.* in the search box, I can see a list of all the files I remember saving on the server. However, I can't open them, or download them either.

That could be browser related. If I click on a file different things happen according to the browser I use:

Opera(10.62) tries to open:file://localhost/C:///hda/Music/Amy%20MacDonald/Amy%20MacDonald%20(2007)%20-%20This%20Is%20the%20Life%20~/Amy%20MacDonald%20-%20This%20Is%20the%20Life%20-%2001%20-%20Mr.%20Rock%20&%20Roll.flac . Nothing happens. The '%20' (ASCII 'space') are probably fine, but the "file://localhost/C:///" part isn't.

Firefox (3.6.6) tries to open:file://///hda/Music/Amy%20MacDonald/Amy%20MacDonald%20(2007)%20-%20This%20Is%20the%20Life%20~/Amy%20MacDonald%20-%20This%20Is%20the%20Life%20-%2001%20-%20Mr.%20Rock%20&%20Roll.flac. Again nothing happens. "file://///hda" probably isn't correct.

The only browser I tried, that worked, is ironically, Microsoft IE8:
file://hda/Music/Amy%20MacDonald/Amy%20MacDonald%20(2007)%20-%20This%20Is%20the%20Life%20~/Amy%20MacDonald%20-%20This%20Is%20the%20Life%20-%2001%20-%20Mr.%20Rock%20&%20Roll.flac. Now it asks me to open or save the file and both actions work correct.

Sorry for the hard to read lines, but they are cut & paste examples from an actual file.

But as Bigfoot65 said before, there would be no need to use the browser. you wrote:
I tried this, assuming that (in my remote computer running Win XP) you're referring to the Start > Run, then enter \\hda in the open box. This entry wasn't recognized, and an error message was the result.
Are you sure you typed '\\hda' and NOT '//hda'? When switching between Linux and Windows this can be confusing. I use HDAConnect3 on remote computers running XP and Vista and it works fine for me.

Else I'd suggest to first try to access your hda this way with a local (windows) client before using HDAconnect3, as this adds a layer of complexity.

I would be remiss if I didn't thank all of you who provided hints and advice as to a possible solution to my challenge in getting the VPN working.

The bottom line thus far is that I have gained access to HDA Shares folders using the following:

1. Verify proper VPN functionality using Amahi website at https://www.amahi.org/user.

2. After installing the HDAConnect3 client software on my remote PC, I have VPN access to the HDA. I could then log in to the HDA using previously established user name and password.

3. The HDA 'home page' allows access to shares using AjaxPlorer. Make sure to use the default login name [admin] and password [admin] for AjaxPlorer, and change these upon access.

So, in summary, I have succeeded in basic VPN access to existing Shares on my HDA.

One Last Requirement
I have one last requirement, though: I would like to be able to, via Remote VPN Access, actually move files into already created Shares folders. Is this possible?

Thanks again for All your assistance.

Regards,
David

Good to hear.

When you access your network remotely via VPN, you should be able to see the shares, with, say:

Code: Select all

\\hda
or

Code: Select all

\\hda.home.com
My HDA: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz on MSI board, 8GB RAM, 1TBx2+3TBx1

OK. I tried the above and can now confirm that after connecting by launching HDAconnect3 and running Windows Explorer, by clearing the Address window and entering \\hda.myhdadomain.com, the shares can be seen. Entering \\hda did not work.

This is convenient to say the least, since access is available without using your browser, or launching any other software.

Thanks again,
David
