VPN Difficulties...

Postby ritmo » Thu Sep 30, 2010 9:31 pm

Using HDAConnect3 as a Remote Client I have managed to access my HDA at home. However, the following I find confusing:

1. If I enter the IP address 10.8.x.x into my browser, the display is blank.

2. If I enter the http://hda.xxx.com I can see the HDA Dashboard, but cannot manage to locate any folders or files on the server. All drop down menus [Files, Images, Audio, Video] are blank.

What am I missing/doing wrong?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
David

Do you enter server's IP address and get a blank display? I think that 10.8.xx.xx is your computer's IP not the server's.
Try finding server's IP and using it.

When you connect via HDA Connect...there is no reason to use IP address. Just use http://hda and to access your shares from Windows....\\hda should work.

I have used this client quite often and it works as if I was sitting at my desk directly connected to the network.

Alireza, Bigfoot65:

Thanks for the response. I got to thinking that maybe my question should have been "How do I make sure I can see the Shares on Amahi via the VPN connection"?

I can clearly see the Amahi Dashboard, but no amount of snooping around reveals the files I know exist on the server!

Thanks again,

David

I Windows, choose the run option. Then in the box you can enter \\hda and should see the shares. You can do the same thing with Windows Explorer using the address bar.

BigFoot65: I tried this, assuming that (in my remote computer running Win XP) you're referring to the Start > Run, then enter \\hda in the open box. This entry wasn't recognized, and an error message was the result. I also tried your suggestion using Windows Explorer. No joy...

So I'm not really clear on the approach you suggest.

I tried again accessing my files on the Server, but no go. I can see the Amahi Dashboard after logging in from the web page http://hda.xxx.com/. The screen shots below show what I see:

1. Dashboard, Home screen
2. HDA screen [seen after clicking on HDA]
3. Shares screen [seen after clicking on Setup > Shares. Here I can see the list of Shares as shown, but there is no content available when I look in any of the folder locations seen.

Maybe I am not following the rules when I save files to the server? Where can I find basic guidelines on creating the Shares and saving data to same?

Thanks,
David

Hello,

I am presuming you are using the HDA or your DHCP and DNS server correct? You can check out the wiki at http://wiki.amahi.org. Don't understand why you are having difficulty unless there is something I am missing.

This is odd...
I have these possible solutions in mind:
-Take a look at shared folder permissions, make sure all permissions are correct (look at attachment): Dashboard > Shares
- When trying to access server files from windows try using \\<Server's IP address> instead of \\hda.
- I see you have "Ajaxplorer", browse in your files with this app and see if same thing happens.

Hello,

Not sure if we're all talking about the same thing.
1. Dashboard, Home screen
2. HDA screen [seen after clicking on HDA]
You know that the 'HDA' button is for searching whatever you type in the empty box beside it? If, for instance, you type 'Michael Bolton' in the box and click on the 'HDA' button, if it finds anything you should realize that you don't like music...
If you leave the box empty you get the screen you attached.

Maybe Amahi shouldn't show you the 'search results' page if you clicked the button while the searchbox is empty, I can't see why that would be useful.

just my 0.02cents

Richard,

You hit the proverbial nail on the head! I hadn't entered anything in the search box - it didn't even dawn on me that it might be a search box. Dohhh..!

Now when I enter, say *.* in the search box, I can see a list of all the files I remember saving on the server. However, I can't open them, or download them either. Where in the Amahi documentation do I find information on this topic? Is it an access setting of some sort?

Thanks again, you've been a big help.

Cheers,
David
