Using Amahi with a registered domain

Just started with Amahi. After a number of hardware problems (the machine it should be going on has developed a mainboard problem, first test machine only has a CD drive, second test machine DVD drive didn't like the Fedora 12 DVD, then Fedora didn't like its graphics card, third test machine, which should be running OS/2 didn't like my spare SATA II drive... ).

Anyway, after much fiddling, I have both Fedora 12 and Amahi running well. though I will have to reinstall once I get the mainboard sorted out, since that machine has a 40 GB (laptop) drive for the system and 4 1TB data drives - my DIY NAS project.

I've now turned off my router's DHCP server, and I'm finding IP allocation a good deal faster from Amahi than it ever was from the router. Very nice.

I still have some app problems, but I'll do some more reading before I ask questions about them.

I do have a question of more immediate concern. I adminster a number of SME server boxes for small businesses. One of them looks like a good candidate for Amahi, especially for WebERP use. However, his business has a registered domain. After a fair bit of browsing through the online docs and reading of forum topics, I'm far from sure how to handle the situation. What is the best approach for setting Amahi up with his domain?

Also, in this instance, DNS and DHCP is handled by the SME gateway box, so I'm wondering how much of the extra functions of Amahi I will lose by turning off the Amahi DHCP?

I hope to be configuring a trial box for him on Friday.....

I can now answer some of my own questions

I used Ken's registered domain for the install, then disabled the Amahi DHCP server (don't think I've got an option there, since SME server provides DHCP and DNS for his network). The first problem I then hit was that I could not access any of the apps from other machines in his network. In order to access the hda, I had to enter the Amahi machine's IP.

That problem turned out to be reasonably easy to fix - I had to use the SME web interface to add a hostname and IP for the HDA and for each of the installed apps. They now work as they should from the Amahi Dashboard.

I now have another question which I haven't seen any easy answer to - how do I uninstall apps that I have installed? I can't see anything in the Dashboard, but I would like to uninstall a couple of apps that don't look as though they will be useful in that network. Any suggestions?

To uninstall apps:

Log into your Amahi hda control panel (Dashboard)
Click on 'Apps' (default theme it is in top right corner)
Now under the 'Apps' tab, select 'Installed'

You will now see a list of the installed apps.
You can click them and see additional setup info and the option to uninstall.

Thanks - I missed the 'Installed' link when I looked earlier.

I've been able to clear out some of the apps I loaded on my own Amahi. Unfortunately, while I was doing so, my phone line went down, which prevented me finishing that job, let alone installing anything new.

Hopefully I'll be able to get BT to fix the line in the next couple of days so I can get back to setting Amahi up. For the moment, I have internet access only from a W2K box at work, using IE 6!
