Using HDA apps for Job Search

Postby andrebaros » Thu Jan 14, 2010 12:04 pm

I just got laid off from work (architect in Chicago) and thought that I could use my HDA to help my job search.

Over the last few years I've learned the value of a database... why make a list when you can make a database. Unfortunately I relied heavily on the resources at my old job and don't have many database skills beyond FileMaker Pro. What would be the best app to use, and the smartest way to approach creating some databases on my HDA. The two I need right away would be portfolio (images with associated data, grouped by project) and job leads (people, companies, dates, numbers and notes).

I was thinking of using Joomla for the portfolio but don't know if that's the simplest way... and Hoard for the job search, but don't want to over complicate my search.

Thanks
Andre

sorry to hear about your current predicament.

i would use a spreadsheet, though if you are used to using a DB-type program, phpAddressBook may work well. same for horde, i think.

opengoo may work too.

i am sure other experts here will chime in. i have seen some app or a feature on an app that matches this well.

for a more sophisticated approach, SugarCRM or vTiger may work, as they are meant to manage relationships.

as for the portfolio, wordpress (with the right theme and plugins) would do great. gallery may also do well, with cooliris. many of the other CRM type apps (drupal, etc.) will work too!
