Back up apps and updates to Amahi

Postby ghmason » Sun Jan 03, 2010 6:10 pm

Sorry to bother you all on a Sunday night but I figured this would be seen first thing in the morning. I had been working with Linux (ubuntu) for about 9 months and decided to totally ditch windows when through some new upgrades and additions to our home computers, I wound up with a new windows 7 machine. I took my old desktop and after backing up my ubuntu 9.10 install, decided to use it as a server. Did some research and started to get real interested in Amahi because of all the features that were built in. I wrestled with Samba for a while on my old desktop in order to share files and a printer but this (amahi) seemed like it was going to be a dream and make it easy for my wife and daughters with their vista notebooks to share files, photo's music, etc.

Well, long story a little longer, it is really nice. I made some mistakes setting it up, like downloading the live version of Fedora 12 instead of the full DVD, and initially not letting it do DHCP, but now that those things are corrected, it is humming along. My wife has already seen the benefit of having all our photos in linpha and I have been experimenting with adding apps and running them from client machines. I have figured out how to administer it from a client (easy) but still go into our guest room to work with what was my friendly old desktop pc for a few years.

I need to ask two questions, the answers to which are not clear to me from pouring over the documentation: 1. As of this writing there are no amahi based back up solutions for my client machines - correct? [PBA is in the shop and Clonezilla has not been implimented yet(?)] 2. When either of these is fixed or implemented, will they automatically show up in my list of available apps? or will I need to do some kind of update on amahi in order to get these installed and run them from amahi?

I don't have a lot of the hardware that this home server solution was probably designed for, but there is no small sense of satisfaction in going from knowing (basically) nothing about a server to running this one and getting the benefits of sharing files and capabilities between client machines that are running vista, ubuntu 9.10 and windows 7. Sorry about this long run-on post but I wanted to say thanks very much. This is a great piece of software. Thanks in advance for answers to the above questions.

Very Respectfully,
GHMason

As for full-disk backups yes. However, there are many other ways to backup.
2. When either of these is fixed or implemented, will they automatically show up in my list of available apps? or will I need to do some kind of update on amahi in order to get these installed and run them from amahi?
They will show in the list. You can keep up with updates in the app updates page, however, we're looking for ways to "watch apps" so that one gets notifications when apps updates occur.

Thanks for your kind words!
BTW, we love it when we get good testimonials and donations to pay the bills :)
