Amahi alongside Windows Home server; can only reach WHS

Hi All,

I have at my place a WHS functioning fine. But I really want to have an Amahi alongside it. And it works -as long as you are inside your home network.
But what I want is to be able to get to both my Windows Home server and to my Amahi server.
The amahi name (name.yourhda.com or something like it) that i got automatically refers/connects me to my WHS. (name.homeserver.com).
How to have them coexisting? Does something have to be changed/adapted in the Amahi install? Like specifically get it to another port and hence add some other portforwarding in the router besides the port forwarding for the WHS?

Who can shed some light on this subject please?

If you use the VPN that comes as standard with Amahi then you will be able to get to both (since it will look like you are on your home network!)

I tried that, but by using the vpn connection i lost my ability to connect to my homeserver completely

Does your Amahi home server provide DNS to all the machines on your home network (including the WHS?)
In order to reach it correctly it must get it's DNS and DHCP lease from the Amahi home server ...

I did not do that; I switched off the dhcp server on the amahi box. Even on home server it relies on the robust server in my router. Cannot see why that should be different for amahi

For Amahi networking to work reliably (and for the VPN to give you access to the entire home network) Amahi must be running as the DHCP and DNS server on your home network -- I am not a networking expert to explain why

The VPN did work whilst the amahi dhcp server was switched off...
But then home server troubles..

Also my amahi domain points to my home server domain so ...

If you don't use the Amahi DHCP server you will not benefit from the ease of use since DHCP will also address DNS services, WINS (if enabled) etc. etc. You also need to configure your router by hand that it should use the amahi box as a DNS server if you want internal name resolving. To simplify the setup (and have the least number of changes in the router) it's easier to just say: turn DHCP off in your router (Amahi's DHCP server is most likely to be more robust than the DHCP in your router BTW) and be done with it because the hda will take care of the rest.

The most likely reason why Windows works in this kind of setup is because WHS is broadcasting every now and then (effectively flooding your network with a scan for hosts) and if you installed the client software the server settings are set in the registry instead of relying on a well known network setup which is more flexible and more robust.

maybe this helps: is the DHCP server required?

you don't need to. you can do other things.
