SOLVED: No Printer shown / unable to install a Printer (f21, Amahi8)

Postby messing » Sat Nov 07, 2015 10:04 am

Hi

After years with my amahi I tryed to upgrade.
I did the minimal CD install like discribed here:
https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Amahi_8_Install and here:
https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Fedora ... al_Install

Then I follwed the install instructions for amahi 8:
https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Amahi_ ... ll_Amahi_8

Now I want to install my kyocera printer that I used on my old hda. I connected the USB cable to my amahi 8 hda. The wiki article https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Adding ... ed_printer
says that I should see the printer now from my windows PC. But the printer is not shown there. It seems that nothing happend when connecting the USB printer.

What can I do? Do I have to do a Full (DVD) Install of Fedora 21?

Hope you can help

Thanks
Matthias

Recommend you refer to the CUPS wiki guidance.

I'm not sure what I am doing there...

But I followed the wiki till this point:
Once in links

1. Hit down arrow until on "Administration" then hit enter
2. Hit down until the checkbox next to Allow Remote Administration is highlit, then press enter
3. Hit down until "Save Changes" is highlighted, and press enter
4. Press q to exit after changes are saved.
which is not very far ;-)

But I can't save changes. Btw it's named "change settings" and I have to enter a username and password for cups. When entering my hda administrator password it says: "unable to change settings: Forbidden"

What is the correct password for cups?

In the next step I have to "open the HDA Webapps configuration page". Where can I do this? In browser of my windowclient?

I feel lost...

You may need to set a root password and use that.
Where can I do this?
Install the Web Apps application.

Not many use hard connected printers anymore which is why this is not well documented for your situation. You might also find additional guidance on the internet.

Finally I managed to install my printer.

The Wiki seems to be wrong or written for older amahi versions. To help others who may have the same problem, here is, what I did:

As writen before I use amahi 8 with a minimal Installation of Fedora 21.

When trying to install / configure cups this helped me:
https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Cups ask you to navigate to "links"
replace
3. Hit down until "Save Changes" is highlighted, and press enter
with "change settings".
When asking for username and password use "root" and "yourownHDApassword" which was set while installation your hda. Only user "root" saved changes.

Creating the webapp
Go to the apps on the dashboard and install webapps. ( I didn't know I had to do so...). Create a new wepapplink in your dashboard (easy)

Creating the Webapp Redirect
If you don't know that nano is a text-editor for linux you will have the next problem here.
When typing "nano /etc/httpd/conf.d/*cups.conf" you get an error because nano was not installed.

yum -y install nano
installs the editor needed. Then you can insert the missing lines as discribed in the cups wiki.

After this I had problems to connect to cups. I guess it had to do with the DNS-Server. I solved it by entering this adress in my browser:
http://192.168.X.XX:631/ (replace 192.168.X.XX with your hda IP)

Then I was able to install my printer

It was a bit tricky for me but I managed in the end.
The hardest part was, that I couldn't connect to my hda using putty. Perhaps there is something missing in the first installation (like the nano editor). But this is another problem.

Yes it was written for older versions of Amahi. We typically identify those pages with a banner indicating Update Needed. That has not been done.

Would you mind making changes to the wiki page based on your experience? We would appreciate it and helps other users as well.

Also you indicated you could not connect to you HDA via Putty. Did you resolve that issue?

I created an account for the wiki and will try to update it. I hope you don't mind some mistakes as english is not my native language ;-)

About putty:
No, I didn't manage to connect.
I found a second thread where this problem belongs to. I think it will be better to discuss it there:
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=6238&start=10

How can I close this thread or mark it as solved?

Thanks.

Yes that other thread will be the one to track.

I will mark this as closed.
