I think i figured it out! It involves flushing the netgear firmware and flash installing dd-wrt firmware in its place. It delivers a much more robust interface with many many more useful features well beyond the original netgear capabilities . you have to be careful how to install it. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS EXACTLY how it is specified or you can brick your router. However, I am a total noob and was able to flash on the first try. Here is the best part. It Actually Works! I was able to forward port 1194 for open VPN and forward DHCP back to the homeserver. I went through many forum and blog posts before committing but here is the one that was the most helpful and router specific:
