Hi
By now managed to install Amahi 7 an have Greyhole and MiniDLNA up and running - the minimum requirements I have.
System information:
- Hostsystem: Xubuntu 14.04 LTS
- Amahi 7 (64bit) runs on Virtualbox 4.3.10 (from official repos)
- DHCP is managed by the router
Problem:
The server has what appears to be random crashes. This is annoying especially while streaming media. I already had Amahi 6 running in similar set up and the same problem though not that frequent. Now I would finally get rid of it an make the system stable.
Additional info:
- Letting Amahi handle DHCP does not influence the problem - still random crashes.
- Crashes occurred also before MiniDLNA was installed. Not sure if crashes occurred before Greyhole was installed.
- Greyhole shows its usual idling at the time of the crash.
If somebody could lead me through the diagnostics and the hopefully subsequent problem solving, it would be most appreciated.
SOLVED: "random" crashes
Re: "random" crashes
This is likely due to the networking setup with the VM.
Recommend you check out Amahi on VirtualBox in the wiki. There are other articles in the wiki as well that might address configuration of the VM and networking.

The indicated site states that bridged mode can be used as well. After trying the other alternatives on that page (written for Fedora 14) I can say, that i can make it work only with Bridged Adapter setting.
I really only know the very basics of a network. Hence, I am not at all qualified to update that article. I also consulted the respective Category having no luck...

Re: "random" crashes
We don't officially support Amahi on a VM. If I used VirtualBoxI might be able to assist, but I use Proxmox for my HDA. No issues and works much better than VirtualBox in my opinion. Nice Web UI and simple to configure.
I do recall when I tried VirtualBox, I did not use the bridged network device. I believe I used NAT instead. Could be wrong, but searching the internet might yield the solution you seek.

SOLVED: Re: "random" crashes
I think I got the problem sorted out. The Server has now been running for almost 24 hours and all functions were used. No crash
The problem seems to be that I used the same physical network connection for the host and the guest simultaneously.
What I did, that apparently solved the problem:
- On the host system I disconnected the pirmary ethernet connection and
- assigned the primary ethernet connection to VirtualBox.
Luckily I had an USB-ethernet adapter which I could use to get a second ethernet connection on my host system to use. (I know normally you don't use the host system, but the temporary setup, where I live now made it convenient.)
Lesson learned: In Bridged Adapter settings, the physical network connection must be disconnected on the host while VirtualBox is running.
I'll get back to this post in case I have any issues again.

Re: SOLVED: "random" crashes
Unfortuantely, the problems returned. Still wondering why. I may chnage the whole system set up.
Re: SOLVED: "random" crashes
Yea sometimes it's hard to get the networking right with VirtualBox which is why I don't use it.
