Hello All,
I am sure this has been explained before but please bear with me as i am a mac user, never used Linux before. I am trying to mount a 4tb my book onto my pc that is running Amahi. I have just plugged the drive in and it shows up in my control console under disks as dev/sdb. Does this mean that the drive is mounted? I have read that to get a drive to mount it is not plug and play, but this drive is showing up. I do not want to reformat this drive as it has all of my media on it, so is there a how to guide somewhere for this? i have found other instructions but they seem to be aimed at specific problems rather than giving a bit more of a generic answer. I have been trawling through google for the past 3 hours but cannot seem to find a definitive answer, I have tried adding a share pointing at dev/sdb but get an error message saying that the path cannot be found. Basically all i need from this system is that i can view movies tv etc on my devices in the house, iPads, mac laptops/desktops, xbox etc, am i missing something or will this be a little more complex to set up? Thanks in advance for your help.
Mounting an external HD
Re: Mounting an external HD
No the drive is not mounted, just connected.
Please follow the adding a second hard drive to your HDA guidance in the wiki. It does account for drives that have data, so you would skip the step for formatting it.
BTW, recommend the Amahi Wiki be your first source for how to do things prior to the internet. It covers many scenarios, problems, etc.

Re: Mounting an external HD
Ok followed the guide to a T, couldn't get into etc/fstab but then had a read and saw that i needed to install nano to open the file. I then added the line where prompted at the bottom of the list in etc/fstab, saved it and the rebooted. I now just boot into emergency mode and nothing else, obviously something has gone wrong but not too sure what......
Re: Mounting an external HD
ok deleted the entry into /etc/fstab and it is now booting normally, but i am straight back to square one now, i'll keep doing some reading but after 5 hours trying to get it working, i am no nearer to being able to share my files......i'll keep reading and see what i can come up with.
Re: Mounting an external HD
Can you post the line you were using for /etc/fstab? I might be able to see what the problem was with it not booting.
The guidance in the wiki should have been your solution. If we work through this, should be able to get it sorted out.

Re: Mounting an external HD
Thanks for the response, i have managed to get a bit of time to sort this out so i ran through everything again this morning and i still get the same problem, once the line of text has been put into /etc/fstab, it will only boot in emergency mode. the line of text is - UUID=640B-0804 /var/hda/files/drives/drive4 ext4 defaults 1 2
i have checked the pre-requisites and run through the list of drives before and after connection. One thing to note is that this drive is connected via USB however the drive isn't identified by this, it comes up as ata.
Also when creating a share, would i point to /dev/sdb or /var/hda/files/drives/drive4 ?
As stated before i am a complete newbie to linux so sorry if it's a stupid question.
Thanks in advance,
Nic.

Re: Mounting an external HD
The UUID appears to be short. Is that the case or did you not post the complete number?
You would point the share to drive4 path. Also when creating a share, would i point to /dev/sdb or /var/hda/files/drives/drive4 ?
Understand and happy to help.As stated before i am a complete newbie to linux so sorry if it's a stupid question.

UUID=640B-0804 /var/hda/files/drives/drive4 ext4 defaults 1 2
Thanks once again, just re-checked and that is all i get when asking for disk id, it states that if i want this disk to mount automatically then that is what i need to enter into the etc/fstab file. the disk is a 4tb wdmybook formatted to HFS journaled. do you have any idea why the number is shorter than it should be?
Thanks once again.

Re: Mounting an external HD
even when adding the share without altering the etc/fstab file i get the error that the item cannot be found when clicking on the share in my finder......
Re: Mounting an external HD
The how to use USB disks guidance might be helpful.
The UUID may be correct, just seemed odd that it was so short.
