Well, with the holidays upon us, I have some time to figure this out (hopefully). I've not had time until now, and I decided to punt until the end of the year. (I did remove a bunch of media files to make room which allowed the server to continue running without the problems I described.)
Earlier you had mentioned that you typically mount your /var/hda/files to a separate disk to help alleviate issues such as this. I think that makes sense from my perspective too.
I have just purchased a 2 Tb drive.
About a year ago I figured out how to install a new USB drive (60Gb, so not large) and figure out how to point my DLNA server to these drives. Will look that up again. But it sounds like mounting that set of subdirectories to a new drive require use LiveCD too. Is that correct ?
Thanks for your patience I am a newbie here and a little out of practice since I have worked on this in a few months.

Re: Simultaneous Issues; MediaWiki (cookies) & HDA Down
To move shares to a different drive is not necessary if using Greyhole. Once the files are part of the storage pool, the /var/hda/files/share become symbolic links and take up virtually no space on the OS drive. See moving Greyhole landing zone for guidance.
If you are not using Greyhole, you can move the shares to a new drive and change the path to them in the Dashboard.
A Live CD is not required in most cases. I would recommend you get the drive mounted using the adding a second hard drive to your HDA guidance.
Then once that is complete, you can begin moving shares. This can be done via command line quite easily, then update the path in the dashboard once complete.
Does that make sense?

Re: Simultaneous Issues; MediaWiki (cookies) & HDA Down
OK. I am not using greyhole, but I will likely move into that direction.
Regarding the drive installation: Will do. In fact, I have done this before and much of that is memorialized in earlier forum posts, so I think I can refresh that.
But this brings me back to the issue I've always had.
My first question is, should I expect to see a drive partitioning that's not very practical in the sense that - as far as I can tell - I am not able to access for storage purposes the larger partitions?
As an example, here's the partitioning of my current hard drive on which the whole system runs.
Thanks!

Re: Simultaneous Issues; MediaWiki (cookies) & HDA Down
The default partitioning scheme for Fedora is not very practical. It tends to make the /home partition the largest.
You can use that space for shares if you choose. Just create a share and make the path reflect /home/share.
Ideally it the partitioning should be customized on initial install. We are hoping to get some guidance added to the wiki, but so far it has not happened. We rely heavily on the user community for tutorials such as this as we have limited resources.
I may try some time to add some guidance in the future. It's definitely long overdue.
This tutorial is somewhat helpful. It does need updated and a bit more detail with screenshots would help.

Re: Simultaneous Issues; MediaWiki (cookies) & HDA Down
I've seen some related posts on this topic from earlier this week and also the new link created on the topic of partitions. I will be reading that tonight.
I have one - I believe minor - question before I proceed:
I have installed to hard drives and have shares on both. One is native to my server (laptop) and the other was USB drive that I keep video files (I formatted, mounted, and pointed movie shares to it last years, based on your help and by following the wiki directions).
I suspect a problem, however. As far as I can tell I can not see this drive using the various linux commands (cfdisk, parted, sfdisk, etc) and using the Linfo app. I know I used to see evidence of the usb drive (which Linfo used to show as "…sdb"). If you see from my earlier posts from last week I included a photo from Linfo, which shows the sda1…sda6. The odd thing my DLNA app plays videos from this drive and I can copy movies to it via the subdirectory which points to that drives. I noticed this situation after a crash of the server months ago, When I powered up, everything worked fine, but I could not see this drive.
Any suggestions on how to be able to "see" evidence of this piece of hardware again ?
Thanks

If you have the USB drive mounted, it should show in the dashboard and with Linux utilities. Can you provide the text for mounting it?
Linfo may need tweaked for USB drives, although I would think if the system sees it so should the app.

Not sure I'm in the right spot on the dashboard. Is this the correct space to look. I;ve also looked in ls -l /dev/ and there is no "sdb1" like their used to be. Is linux utilities a separate app ?

Yes I would presume it would display there.
Did you mount the drive using hda-diskmount and follow the adding a second hard drive to your HDA article? There is also wiki guidance for how to use USB disks.

I also managed to find this old forum post, where It shows the sdb1 usb drive and the Linfo used to see it just fine. By comparison to the photo I uploaded to this thread a couple of days back, sdb1 is not showing.

Yes, I added a second drive using those directions a while back.
Here is a detailed run thru of what we did back then which worked easily.
And I believe the drive must be running. Which command should I run to re-mount. Obviously I don;'t need to reinstall or re-format that drive. Is there a mount command I should issue.

According to this earlier post: The new drive is mounted here:
/var/hda/files/drives/drive1
And sure enough here's what it looks like, though I;m not sure what this tells me:
