Help with moving hard drive to HP Media Smart EX 485

Postby themikerr » Sun May 04, 2014 2:30 pm

Before quickly pointing me to a link on how to do this, please note that I have read numerous sites/blogs/posts, etc on how to move the hard drive, but am having problems with the directions.

When I attempt to run this command,

rm /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules

I receive a message that says "No such file or directory"

I have also seen it written as rm /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net-rules

When I execute this command I also receive the "No such file or directory"

So, where is the 70-persistent-net.rules file and how can I remove it?

Additionally, I am trying to edit the ifcfg-eth0 file, but when I try to use nano, it tells me "Command not found". I assume this to mean that nano is not installed, so I tried to install it from the command line using "sudo apt-get install nano". After entering my password, I get a "apt-get" command not found" error message.

Any help would be appreciated.

I had Ubuntu 14.04 installed on the hard drive prior to installing Amahi. I did not install Amahi via the GUI, instead I burned a copy of the Quick Start CD and had the computer boot to the CD to install.

I am a bit lost here.

What is the quick start CD?

Your post says moving hard drive to WHS. We support Amahi here, not WHS.

Can you please clarify what you are trying to do so we might help. If it's trying to get Amahi working, that we can work. Otherwise you are asking in the wrong place.

I have a HP Media Smart Server, EX 485 which which is a good piece of hardware, but the operating system is no longer supported. I dont want to just throw the hardware away, so after reading about Amahi on Lifehacker and HowToGeek thought I would try to load it onto the EX 485. After reviewing numerous postings on how to do that, and following the directions, I am still having trouble with the issues as stated above.

I will change the subject to be "Help with moving hard drive to HP Media Smart EX 485" to make what I am doing less confusing.

Also, after rereading, I realize it is called the "Express CD" and not "Quick Start CD"

Understand.

Search the forms here and Amahi wiki. I believe there are some who have been successful with Amahi 7 and this hardware.

I just successfully did this with a ex475.

Install Fedora from USB and then manually install Amahi per the wiki. You'll need to play games with the HDD being in the enclosure long enough to be detected but not long enough to boot from. Place the USB in the bottom USB port on the back to boot from it. You'll also need to make sure the Sata emulation is set for all 4 bays as 4(IDE) or only 1 & 3 will be recognized.

This is something that might be good to add to the wiki.

Did y'all ever get the stinking fans to work?
I just installed Amahi on my 485 due to whs v1 crashing and would like fan control.
Thanks,

I managed to get ubuntu-Amahi v6 installed on a EX-485. For the lights, I found this: https://github.com/merelin/mediasmartserverd

I haven't tried the .deb pkg though. If you decide to give it a shot, please post results.

Just a followup in case anyone is interested. I downloaded the .deb and it wouldn't install, saying the file was not deb format. So, I learned how to compile from the source files found in a zip. That was a newbie adventure, but I got it working. The damn LED is not blinking and the LEDs on each of the 4 drives are lit up. I launch the command from etc/rc.local, and all seems OK so far.

Yaay!
