My short links to applications don't work from Windows

Postby feher » Mon Aug 17, 2009 6:47 am

First, the good news: Amahi inspired me to put Linux to work at home for the first time. The installation went well and my new HDA is up and running .. except

Whenever trying to access installed applications like SLIDESHOW, IRC, they don't work (from my Windows 7 machine) if I follow the short link as shown under the "installed applications" tab. By "not working" I mean that I get an external web site such as slideshow.home.com (or something similar - sorry, I am writing this from memory  ) When I used the longer URL (I happened to find a reference to this for the SLIDESHOW) I was able to access the app. When using the browser on the HDA (Linux) box, I have no problem with the short link/URL for either the SLIDESHOW or IRC. I can use the "http://hda" link and the file shares seem to be working as well from Windows.

During the HDA setup I used two internal drives, #1 with four partitions (/,/boot,swap & /home), #2 mounted to /var/hda - no LVM. I replaced "localhost.localdomain" in the FEDORA setup with "home.com". My router's DHCP is turned OFF. My network file shows ....."home.com", my hosts file has the first line like [127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost home.com hda] (I haven't tweaked either file manually)

I am wondering how I can fix the apps so that I would NOT get external websites every time I try to use the regular, short links for my local apps. Any help and advice would be appreciated.

Having problems with connecting to the internet? Try the Network Troubleshooter.

Not sure what your Gateway IP? Head on over to the Find Your Gateway IP page to find out easily.

hmm, we see this every once in a while.

the problem is the client does not DNS resolution in some way.

we will put long urls starting pretty soon.

in the mean time, check the tcp/ip settings. if this is a machine that has been "corporatized" where the primary DNS settings have been set to something, it may not resolve.

or .. you can set your own home domain in there. i don't think there is a guide for this in the wiki (hint, hint ... :) )

The problem seems to be resolved. While I was (re)installing the HDA, I had to change the IP/DNS settings on the Windows "client" several times. When the HDA was done I restarted my Windows machine and I was under the impression that the DNS/IP was set back to DYNAMIC. When I looked again yesterday, I noticed that it was still set to manual, with the DNS pointing at the router instead of it being set by the HDA and pointing at 192.168.1.10.

User error ... as usual. By the way, the slideshow now works and it is cool!

Thanks for the tip.

I also have experienced this issue with Win7 - one of my PCs was fine and the other was not.

On the problem box I adjusted the Workgroup to the correct one for my home network and this did not resolve the issue.

I could ping everything fine from Win 7 and tested IE and Firefox to see if it was a browser issue (it wasn't).

So I rolled back my network adapter driver as far back as they would go and rebooted and this fixed the issue.

I remembered that Windows Update had offered me an updated driver a while back (before I set up Amahi actually), so I guess should not always fix what ain't broke!
