Partners Laptop - no web access

Postby dtwo » Mon Mar 31, 2014 2:37 pm

Hi,

Partner, "But why do we need a server in the hall?"

Me: "We just do, trust me you wont even know its there..."

So, me newbie - install went well, tablets, phones, desktop all A OK - but partners Window 7 laptop, it can see the shares but its now failing to connect to web, trying to load with any browser says, "waiting for sitename.com" but then nothing happens. If I type in IP address 192.168.x.x I can get to the server but otherwise nothing.

I turned BT Netprotect Firewall (Macafee) off and it seemed to work, but then after rebooting even with firewall still off it just refuses to connect to websites, yet all the other devices work fine. Laptop is set to get IP address automatically.

Any ideas? Thanks, David

Take a look at this:
https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Vista_Networking_Issue

Might try pinging the HDA from the Windows command prompt.

Thanks for fast reply, I can ping HDA and ROUTER, resolves IP address and I get response but still not connecting to websites.

I see there are other options and radio buttons in the Advanced DNS settings, are they important?

Cheers, David

Not for this issue. Try accessing http://hda.amahi.net or whatever your domain name is for your server. Seems like the laptop is not getting DHCP lease from the HDA.

Might try the troubleshooting on http://docs.amahi.net.

Thanks again, working through the Interactive Guide on a different PC, Windows 8.1

All steps are good apart from;

nslookup hda.amahi.net

Server: hda.amahi.net
Address: 192.168.1.10

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: hda.amahi.net.amahi.net
Address: 208.115.201.197

The second part doesn't look correct?

Thanks again, David

That is odd.

Did you check to see that the IP address for the laptop is comming from the HDA?

Hi, yes - DHCP turned off on router, if I look at the network settings on HDA I can see it being issued with an IP address.

If I type
http://hda - I get the HDA at 192.168.1.10
if I type
http://router - it connects elsewhere and gives me a 403 Error from some host other than my router.

Everything else seems OK, I continued through to the end on the interactive trouble shooter and every further step was as expected. Only other odd thing I found was that I couldn't do an nslookup by SSH to HDA, some response similar to command not found.

Is it worth doing a new install would you think?

Probably need to install this app on the HDA to use that command:
http://www.amahi.org/apps/hda-troubleshooting-tools

If it's just the one lattop with the problem, reinstalling Amahi most likely will not solve the issue. Need to determine why it's not working if all the other clients and devices work as designed.

Appreciating the fast replies, thank you.

So as it stands. All seemed OK but Win 7 laptop would not connect to web.

Win 8.1 desktop would, running Interactive help just the one odd thing as reported above. Retried the Advanced DNS setting on laptop and it seems good now.

Just one odd thing, on all PCs and devices

http://hda - good

http://router
http://help
etc takeoff to amahi domain, not my machines

Any thoughts? David

Did you set a domain in your amahi.org profile? If not, it defaults to amahi.net.

This is a DNS issue most likely, so best thing I can say is to check that all machines are getting their DNS from the HDA and only the HDA. Both primary and secondary DNS for a machine must point to the HDA IP address.
