SOLVED: Cannot Initialize disk

Postby lMarioweb » Wed Mar 19, 2014 3:06 am

Amahi looks to me as a great alternative for my Windows home server. So I’m starting enthusiastic to install (from a brand new USB stick by using Amahi 7.1 X64 iso) Amahi on a Dell Optiplex 745 with an 80Gb harddisk. I’ve ordered an new 2TB HD to add later ass data partition.
In the begin is looks the install goes fine. I get the chance to select a language but after that there comes an error report (anaconda 19.30.13-1) witch tells me “cannot initialize a disk that has partitions”. From this point I’m stock.

I’ve tried several things:
1) Partition (Partion Wizard home edition 8.1.1) before install:
swap primair 4Gb swap
boot primair 250mb ext4
root Logical 20Gb ext4
home Logical 51GB ntfs
var Logical 5Gb ext4
2) Use no partion at all and try to install
3) Install Linux mint Mate to check if my hardware configuration is causing the problem. Mint install and works fine.
So I’m not familiar with Linux and thought de Amahi install didn’t really need Linux experience but I can’t get Amahi installed. Can anyone offer a solution?

You might try the full DVD install.

Only other option I could recommend would be to remove all the partitions, then create a single ext4 partition on the drive as primary and bootable.

Also did you verify the Express CD is not corrupt? That could cause problems.

Yesterday I finally got Amahi working. Now it's a challenge for me to get to understand how to control it. I thought to get an interface on the server machine it self so I could create users and shares there. Instead I have to use another cliënt to do so. But i ques that part of learning Amahi. I was used to Windows Home server.

I got it working by using the full DVD method (fedora + manual amahi commands).
Creating a single ext4 partition was not working.
I also made a new express cd on another cliënt. That din't work either.

When I now try to add a second user it tells me that the username is invalid. What are the conditions (cracters) for a username ?

Yes you use a web browser to administer Amahi. That's the beauty of it, can do it from any machine or device that has a web browser.

For user names, you should be able to use just a name such as mike or trudy. Don't recommend using spaces or special characters unless it's a period. For example, mike.jones would be a valid name.

The wiki offers a lot of assistance as does the videos on the install site, http://docs.amahi.org. I presume you followed the guidance there.

I'm would never disagree with the advantage of a webbased interface. I meant dat on my server (the fysical machine) I can't control it (hda dashboard). The browser can't forward me to the login so I use another machine to setup amahi.

For the names I get the impresion that it is not allowed to have very little differences between usernames. It would be nice if there would be a list of conditions to the format of usernames.

Thank you for your support. I will go on exploring te benefits of amahi.

There is a web called Webmin that will let you do system admin functions.

Usernames cannot be the same obviously, but even slight differences should be fine. Don't recommend using title case as Linux prefers lowercase. The user name criteria is Linux controlled, not by Amahi. You can check the Fedora web site for help there.

Amahi is designed to be headless so the you can use command line for things the Dashboard does not do.
