Non-amahi apps on 7?

Postby cybercowboy » Mon Feb 10, 2014 11:35 am

I've been running Amahi for years (started with it on Ubuntu 10.04 I believe, then ran on Fedora 14 and now Ubuntu 12.04) and while it has much/most of what I want I always end up adding apps not in the Amahi store.

Presently I'm running Amahi 6 on Ubuntu 12.04 and am needing to upgrade my hardware and figure I might as well update to the newest Amahi as well.
My understanding is Amahi 7 is based on Fedora 19, but I'm concerned that I won't be able to load outside apps as I have in the past since. Is all the fedora behind the scenes stuff still available so I can add my preferred tools? I'm just worried with the integrated installer and such and want to make sure AMahi's not trying to be a complete distro that does locking down or making so I can't install from a straight .rpm package.

You can still pretty much do anything you want as with Fedora 14 and Ubuntu. There are no restrictions. Amahi continues to be an add on to the OS, not it's own distro. We made an Express CD to keep users from needing to download the DVD.

Ah got it, and as I understand Amahi 7 is based on Fedora 19. If the pattern holds true with Amahi 8 then be back on Ubuntu? If so when will beta release of that be expected?

No guarantee we will continue with Ubuntu. It depends if we have a Ubuntu developer available. It is possible Amahi 8 could be on Fedora 21.

There really is no pattern to what OS we use. The first Amahi on Ubuntu was 12.04. Our primary developer, cpg, is the Fedora dude. That's why Amahi has been on Fedora for all releases except the one for Ubuntu. We have another person who developed for that distro. If he's available, we may get another LTS version working with Amahi. If not, then we will stick with Fedora.

I personally would prefer to stick with one distro. Not impartial to either one, just hate switching back an forth. It's also a lot of work to update apps with multiple distros.
