SOLVED: Problems Getting Past DVD Download

Postby galoisienne2 » Sun Nov 03, 2013 6:32 am

I have kept my original message below for archival purposes, however the original question about how to get the DVD loaded properly has been resolved. I doubt most users will have use of it; however, for extreme novices like me, this little write up might be useful. I will also say that the amahi instructions for install might footnote some of this stuff to save new newbies from a few hours of frustration and more likely rapid quitting. I came within a hairs breadth a couple of times of driving to the nearest apple store to buy a macmini and OS X server (though the cost of that pushed me back as well  ).

In resolving it, I came to realize to basic things: 1) bit torrent downloads require a separate app to manage the downloading process. Did not realize that. 2) Once the torrent does it job, what you have at the end is a .iso file. That was clear enough, however, what I didn't realize is that burning this needs to be done in a particular way. My iMac prompted me to click a burn button and what I obtained in the end was the same .iso file, but this time burned onto my DVD. Well that's useless (as I discovered last night) for proceeding with the install, though it took some time to figure out what the culprits were (things look obvious in retrospect b/c all the other potential problems causes had to be eliminated, and those are forgotten once the solution is found). Anyway, evidently, there are many free apps out there that specialize in the proper burning to CD/DVD of .iso files. IN addition, the along with standard MAC OS comes the useful "disk utility" application. Use that to burn the ISO file. It's basically a drag and drop operation. I was concerned after the burning began the my DVD would be burned in a format that my HP laptop would not recognize, but it appears to work fine, as I now see my laptop prompting me with my language choice for the Amahi, install process. I also learned, though did not pursue (began to but aborted for one last, and ultimately fruitful attempt at DVD approach) that using a USB stick instead of a DVD is also possible, using special software that extracts the .iso file in a proper manner to the USB stick. There is also free software out there for that, downloaded it, did the extraction, but couldn't get my laptop to boot to it, notwithstanding many attempts to modify the boot process. I'm sure it's easily doable, but again, tried the DVD approach again, which worked. Actually, it was discovering the USB software and the fact that it extracts the .iso file in a particular way which gave me the hint that I wasn't burning the DVD properly in the first place. Further inquiries in that direction led me to realize the likely correctness of that suspicion, and I eventually learned of the disk utility of the Applications folder of the iMAc.

[[RESOLVED -- THE BELOW IS RESOLVED. KEEPING HERE AND NOT DELETING FOR ARCHIVAL PURPOSES. See above for comments regarding the steps in resolving]]
I am fairly novice at these sorts of procedures, so I'm sure this has something to do with it. IN that regard, I'll try to post as much detail as I can, in case my mistake is in one of the more mundane steps.

I'd like to install Amahi 7 (via express install) on my HP laptop which currently runs Windows 8 on a duo centrino chip (so 64 bit). I am using the bit torrent approach. Having never used a torrent download before, I didn't know I need a torrent client, which I've downloaded.

Question 1: In setting up the torrent download, is it o.k. to point the torrent client to my DVD, or should I download to my hard drive, then copy the download to the writeable DVD. Incidentally, I'm finding it easier to do all this torrent downloading from my iMac rather than from the aforementioned laptop. I also plan to use the DVD burner of my iMac to burn the DVD.

I mention all this because I have already gone thru this exercise and I wasn't able to get my laptop to boot to the DVD. I entered the bios and changed the boot ordering and saved and although I could see the DVD drive working, it eventually booted to windows. As a result I am thinking one of two things went wrong:

(1) I didn't burn the DVD properly, although I did confirm that the check-sums did match
(2) I didn't set the boot-up priority on my lap top correctly

Regarding (1), the only question I have there is, what should the DVD files look like if they're in their correctly? I ask this because when using my iMac, what is on the file listing of the DVD is a single file in the form of a virtual volume. When i click to open that I see the 3 main files, 2 of which are folders if i recall correctly and then also the dummy kernel file. So the question is, should the DVD's file-listing show the 3 files directly (i.e., without being bundled as part of virtual volume), or, should the filelisting show the volume?

(I should also say, when I click on the volume, it opens a virtual drive called Anaconda with the 3 files I mentioned, I tried copy/pasting those files individually to the DVD, but they past as "shortcut" files, not the files themselves. SO I did not pursue this, and I ended up burning the DVD with the single virtual volume file (".iso" extension).
Thanks very much for any help !

So is there still a need for assistance? Your post is confusing and lengthy. If you could be a little more clear on what you need, we might be able to help. Please tell us what you need specifically.

Not sure if this applies here, but recommend when you post, best not to come back and edit it to add more. Just reply to your original one and add what you desire.
