I believe I keep having issues installing 7.1 using the express disc. I have tried 3-4 times, but I believe I still have a network issue.
For my last attempt, I disabled an onboard nic and made sure I only had one nic active. It did show up as eth0 (I've read that can be a problem). I'm not sure I'm having the correct behavior after pressing the Reboot button at the end of the express disc install. The first several times (before I disabled the second nic), I would just get a black screen after reboot. If I did a hard reboot, fedora would start and I can log in. The last attempt, after I disabled the second nic, I did not get just a black screen on reboot. Unfortunately, in its place I got a Kernel Panic message and some kind of stack dump message. Hard rebooting after this error does load fedora 19, but I don't think networking is up. I tried the network troubleshooting guide, however, when I enter the command nslookup hda from the bash prompt, I get a Command not found message. I have very little Unix exposure, so I very well could be missing something obvious.
What should I try next?
Thanks!
How do I verify Install success or failure
Re: How do I verify Install success or failure
Once you complete install and reboot, ensure you don't touch it for a few minutes. Even if you see the login screen, leave it alone. It should disappear and the screen will go blan before it reboots a second time on it's own.
If you don't allow it to get to that point, installation will fail.

Re: How do I verify Install success or failure
I've tried the install again and I'm just seeing a black screen after pressing the initial reboot button. Seems to have hung on that screen - I left it for over an hour (and counting). I'm pretty sure if I hard booted the machine now, I would get fedora to launch and a login screen - but is this a successful install? I have been able to reach the HDA console after an install like this, but it had the "no apps available" type message. When I've tried the network troubleshooter, the nslookup command is not found.
I'm a bit suspect of my fios router - it has been a bit flakey lately, but nothing obvious enough to suffer through a call to verizon. However, every install attempt I've made so far (5) has had either a blank screen or kernel panic after the installer reboot button. Does this sound like a network problem? Can I try to do something different?

Re: How do I verify Install success or failure
Sounds like a network issue. The reason the install never completes has something to do with connectivity. Is your network card being recognized as eth0?

Re: How do I verify Install success or failure
It is showing up as eth0. I have 2 nics in the computer, but I disabled the on board nic via bios. Now there is only one nic showing in the installer, and it is connected eth0.
Re: How do I verify Install success or failure
It must be something with the connection then. If you do not see it reboot a second time after the initial reboot, the install is not complete.

Re: How do I verify Install success or failure
Sorry if this is too basic a unix question for this forum, but how would I know if my network card has the proper drivers installed? I have an onboard nic which I may try next, but I added a nicer intel card, I think for woli support, but it may have been due to an issue with the onboard nic, can't remember.
I believe fedora installed - I have a login screen. Could I do something to confirm if my nic is working? If not, I could either install drivers or switch to my onboard nic in the bios. And again, sorry for such a basic question, but what command could I use to confirm a network connection?
Is there an intro to fedora type guide which is recommended?
Thanks for the help

Re: How do I verify Install success or failure
Try doing a ping to google.com and if it fails, your network card is not working. Fedora should install any drivers needed automatically. If it's Intel, it should work out of the box.

Re: How do I verify Install success or failure
I was able to ping google. I tried 7.1 again and it just would not reboot. I remembered I had downloaded a 7.0 express dvd iso - tried that and it worked the first try. I did do a check-sum on the image for 7.1 and it was correct. If others have had no issue with 7.1, maybe I had a bad burn?
Anyway, I think I have it installed now. I can get to the console from http://hda/. However, the apps section still has this message:
There are no applications available at this time.
I have disabled DHCP on the fios router so HDA is now the DHCP server. I still see the no apps message.
I ssh'd onto the hda and ping fails. Trying the network troubleshooter and nslookup hda still results in a bash: command not found message.
Ping did succeed when I logged directly on the box, but fails over ssh.

Re: How do I verify Install success or failure
Good to hear you got it installed. There are apps. Recommend you do:
to ensure you have the latest bits. If you still do not have apps, check the status of your install on amahi.org. It should reflect your HDA running.
Code: Select all
yum update hda-ctl hda-platform
