Adding second disk problem

Postby larsme » Thu Aug 22, 2013 3:32 am

Hi! I have just installed Amahi on an Ubuntu 12.04 LTS system running on an old HP-MSS home server. I did the Linux install on another 32-bit machine, booted the HP-box with the transplanted drive in the bottom bay and made the Amahi installation via the Net. Now I just cannot get the system to see any added second hard drive. I have tried several disks with ext3 and ext4 file systems and also NTFS file systems, and I put them in with the Amahi system up and running. If I insert the second drive before booting, the HP-MSS won't boot at all.
Amahi seems to have a lot of the functionality I need and in a few months we shall have a fibreoptic internet connection here, which will make the system even more useful.
Hoping for advice!

Additional hard drives are not automatically detected in Amahi. You have to manually add them using this guidance.

Thanks for the swift reply! I read the wiki thoroughly and my problem is with the first step of the process described there. The response I get from the command "ls -1 /dev/disk/by-id/ | egrep -v "part|scsi"" is

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 aug 22 11:15 ata-ST31000340NS_9QJ13T93 -> ../../sdb
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 aug 22 11:15 dm-name-HP--MSS-root -> ../../dm-0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 aug 22 11:15 dm-name-HP--MSS-swap_1 -> ../../dm-1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 aug 22 11:15 dm-uuid-LVM-4P37RIwA2iF6XvFDNC832vWe2rhcMMf9f52Um3c4izzr7WYfwQ3fEpsGoydE7RlQ -> ../../dm-1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 aug 22 11:15 dm-uuid-LVM-4P37RIwA2iF6XvFDNC832vWe2rhcMMf9qn2sHVT48mM03RjrmU5XcI042V7rfIoW -> ../../dm-0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 aug 22 11:15 usb-SMI_USB_DISK_AA04012700041999-0:0 -> ../../sda
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 aug 22 11:15 wwn-0x5000c5000d4655cf -> ../../sdb

Obviously the OS remembers the usb disk I attached previously but the entries starting with "dm-" I do not understand. The output does not change when I add another SATA disk while the system is running and when I try to boot with the second disk already in, the system does not come up. The HP is headless and has no display connector. I tried pressing the return-key repeatedly on a USB keyboard, but no booting takes place.....
Hoping for your patience!

Not sure either what is going on. Might take a look at this guidance in the wiki.

Not sure if it will help, but worth a shot.
