Tranmission error when trying to start previously downloads

Postby theredballoon » Sat Apr 20, 2013 2:56 pm

So I installed transmission and followed most of the directions on the wiki (for some reason, it's not finding the user "transmission", so I can't change the user permissions/groups). Transmission seems to be up and running, but when I try to restart torrents for the which the files are on located on a greyhole share, I get a "No data found! Ensure your drives are connected or use "Set Location". To re-download, remove the torrent and re-add it." in Transmission Remote GUI when I try to re-verify after changing the location of the files.

So, several questions- what do I seem to be doing wrong? Why is the transmission user not found? Also, should I be setting the new location as the greyhole share (/var/hda/files/XYZ) or the local mount (/mnt/samba/XYZ)? Thoughts?

FYI; i'm running amahi on a headless server on Ubuntu Server 12.04, so everything needs to be done through terminal and not GUI.

As a slight update- when I try to start new torrents, it runs for a few seconds and then does the same thing (gives the error "No Data Found...")

Not sure what the issue could be. As you may have noticed, the guidance in the wiki is a bit dated. It also is not specific to Ubuntu.

Have you considered trying the Amahi Transmission app? It might provide better results.

I am using the Amahi transmission app- I tried doing a manual install of transmission but hit a wall. Uninstalled packages and tried the Amahi Tranmission app.

Ok, it is possible there is something left behind from the manual install that is causing issues with the web app.

You might try uninstall, then reboot, then reinstall.

:) Ok that worked mostly- I was able to start two new torrents without problems. When I added an existing one, however, it started to verify the existing files and then stopped, giving me a "Permission Denied" error. I suspect this is related to transmission user accessing the files (which are owned by another user); I tried adding transmission to users (per the wiki) but got a "user 'transmission' does not exist" error. Thoughts?

Also- there are a bunch of errors/changes in the wiki (notably the location of the settings.json file)- should I make changes? (Sorry if that seems like a dumb question for a wiki, since the purpose is for broad editing)

What command are you using to add a new user called transmission? Also if you feel the wiki needs updating, please feel free to do so.

Well here's some multiple updates- short version, I had a combination of file permissions and file name mismatch that was preventing the previously downloaded torrents from starting.

Issue 1: Some files were owned by root and not by the correct user. I was using the incorrect form of the change permissions command. Gluh. Anyways, I fixed the permission errors using the correct chmod

Issue 2: Had mostly nothing to do with transmission/amahi/ubuntu. Short version, files were originally on winblows home server, where uppercase/lowercase was ignored by utorrent. However, ubuntu/amahi doesn't work that way. I finally figured this out when transmission, after manually running a verify files, only found some of the files in the directory, and not the others. I used a "rename 'y/A-z/a-z/' * to fix this case-ness issues and, like magic, transmission recognized all files in the torrent and starting without issue. I mostly blame the torrent file since the original files were uppercase, but whoever uploaded the torrent made the filenames lower case in the torrent file. Gluh again.

I will get around to updating the transmission wiki at some point with ubuntu specific commands and other changes (notably the location of the settings.json file).

Sounds good. Glad you were able to get things sorted out.

Adding the Ubuntu specifics to the wiki would be greatly appreciated. It is always nice to have contributions from users that has been tested and know to work. Definitely will help others.
