Basic Understanding Questions

Postby samtreat » Fri Feb 15, 2013 3:29 pm

Hello all, I have a quick question to clarify my understanding of the way a greyhole storage pool works. Am I correct in saying that a single file is "split" amongst all drives in the pool with copies being used as redundancy "split" and stored in a different order? So for example access when accessing a single file all drives in the storage pool are active (being read from)?

No, not split. I believe a file is "duplicated" as necessary. Technically it's n-duped to achieve the number of extra copies requested.

When reading, one copy is read (subject to greyhole's choice, iirc).

I think I see what you mean, so for example if I instructed greyhole to not keep any copies, only keeping the original file in the storage pool when read only a single hard drive would be accessed?
