I'm wondering if I shouldn't just do a reinstall of bind9, does Amahi do any customization to the files after installation, or is it just the base?

no, amahi's control panel still shows DNS running, but the named service doesn't exist, nor does /etc/named.conf. Yes I'm running ubuntu 12.04, sorry.

I am still unable to ping any external names.

Erm all of a sudden it is now working again. Not sure what I did or didn't do that adjusted it but thanks for your help.

I believe Amahi does do some customizations to the files. I hate to say it, but you might be better off doing a new install.

It gets tricky when you try to put things back that somehow have gotten removed.

Did you have a power outage? Things just don't uninstall themselves, so something had to cause it.

Also the network troubleshooting guide needs to be updated, the service isn't called named anymore but is called bind9. Which is running at this point

Glad you got it working again.

The network troubleshooter is generic and not specific to Ubuntu. It was originally designed for Fedora so that's why it's called named. Bind9 is Ubuntu.

We are releasing a new web site soon with it split among the two distros. I think it's almost ready.

OK update, things weren't working as well as I thought before. Per advice from here I tried a re-install and I've got the same thing happening, internal DNS is resolving but external isn't. resolv.conf points only to the amahi server itself (I'm not sure where I can check for if it is actually looking outside, I know better than to edit resolv.conf itself)

at this point I can't even install ssh or any other packages onto the new install since it can't resolve the repo addresses.

There is something amiss in your network if you did a reinstall and it still does not work. I presume you wiped out the old OS and Amahi, then started new, correct?

Yes and even installed onto a new HDD (old one was getting small anyway)

All other machines on the network when they don't use the Amahi for DNS resolve fine, so while I understand what you're saying I can't agree that it's a network issue. When DHCP and DNS are turned on in my router and I use that the other devices connect fine. Even in that setup though the Amahi Server will not resolve external addresses.

However I'm married so used to admitting I'm wrong, if you can think of something I should try in my network I'll gladly give it a go.

Also of note, up until I do the reboot after running

Code: Select all

#sh install-amahi
I am able to ping outside sources (I'm in the process of reinstalling again on the assumption that I screwed something up last time.)

Obviously up until that point the server is a DHCP/DNS client and not actually a server so it is looking to other machines to do the resolving for it. I'll post an update after the reboot and see if I can narrow down exactly WHEN it begins to fail, but it seems to me that since it's working up until Amahi install it has to be an Amahi related problem.
