Web Interface no longer accessible

Postby kmpc » Sat Jan 05, 2013 8:56 pm

Had to do a fsck on a secondary drive not even related to the install because it was complaining about an unclean mount. After this completed and did the repairs, the web interface died.

Port 80 is not active from what I can tell, I tried a port scan on the IP and it returned only with the ftp being open.

Is there a fix for this per chance without having to do a reinstall?

Also - when I set this up intially, I got confused and told it to default to home.com which as many would know is a parked domain. I know I can tell the computer to point to the HDA for the DNS to resolve this issue, but for various reasons related to my end, I don't want to do that any time I want to connect to the apps installed. Is there a way to change that?

You need to try the network troubleshooter to see what the problem might be. If any OS files got corrupted, that could cause all sorts of issues.

Also using home.com is not an issue. It does not have any affect on anything that I know of. When exposing your HDA to the internet, you use the Amahi dynamic DNS which is different.

Using the Network Troubleshooter, I failed step 4 - DNS resolving for internal hostnames. Here's a paste to help troubleshoot: http://sprunge.us/TZAV

Part of the command not found I think in there was because of Putty - really made me hate it doing the steps. I am so used to Mac terminal as well as Linux terminals where copy/paste worked without special mouse clicks. :) (Recent Mac convert here so hard to readjust to the Windows way of things).

I am trying to access via the IP address by the way and not the web url. So something like http://192.168.1.113

Is the HDA your DHCP/DNS Server? If so, ensure you turned off those function in your router. There are tradeoffs for not using the HDA for those functions.

http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Turning_off_DHCP

You also need to renew the IP address on your clients. Why use the IP address to access if you can use the URL.

The router is my DNS client. No need to have both.

I assign static IP's to all my clients as well but leave the DHCP on for when we have visitors to the home with their wifi devices.

The reason I access via IP is because I cannot access the server using the host name. Plus - it is faster for me to type the numeric address in the bar.

All I need to know is how to restore the interface and it seems like we are heading down a road of if networking is correct on my end.

It worked before (See the first post), until I did a FSCK so that tells me it got borked some how with the fix of the drive's table. Then, after the fix - the interface won't load.

You posted results of the network troubleshooter that indicate things are not ok with your network. To be honest, using the HDA for DHCP/DNS is easier and causes less issues. You have the same capability for wireless, only difference is the HDA hands out the IP addresses. Obviously it's your server, but just giving my recommendation based on experience.

If you feel your networking is fine, then it may be something was corrupted. If so, the only easy way to fix it is reinstall. Too many variables to determine what the actual problem could be. Unless you can find something in a log file to indicate the problem, there is no way to begin diagnosing why the dashboard is not accessible.

Reinstall fixed the issue, but really wish I didn't have to do that. None the less - problem solved.

I agree. Hate that sometimes reinstall is the best option. Recommend you make a back up, something like Clonezilla Live CD works wonders. I back up all my machines in case of catastrophe. Restore is much more painless than reinstall.
