vnc log using up all hard drive space on hda?

Postby stern88 » Sat Oct 27, 2012 2:07 pm

Sometimes I want to access my desktop graphically. In my local network I use the App "VNC", from the internet I use freeNX in floating window mode. The last time I had problems concerning my disk usage. It seems like the process "/usr/libexec/vino-server" holds the log file open (fuser *name-of-file*) and writes to it (iotop) as long as the process is running:

Code: Select all

[root@hda administrator]# cd .vnc/ [root@hda .vnc]# ls hda.home.lan:4.log passwd xstartup [root@hda .vnc]# ls -al insgesamt 7463556 drwxr-xr-x 2 administrator users 4096 27. Okt 22:51 . drwx------. 42 administrator administrator 4096 7. Okt 14:30 .. -rw-r--r-- 1 administrator users 7642625284 27. Okt 22:51 hda.home.lan:4.log -rw------- 1 administrator users 8 1. Mai 22:56 passwd -rwxr-xr-x 1 administrator users 575 1. Mai 22:56 xstartup [root@hda .vnc]# fuser hda.home.lan\:4.log hda.home.lan:4.log: 3191 [root@hda .vnc]# ps -aef | grep 3191 500 3191 1 22 Oct06 ? 4-21:33:07 /usr/libexec/vino-server root 15045 9659 0 22:52 pts/2 00:00:00 grep --color=auto 3191 [root@hda .vnc]# pwd /home/administrator/.vnc [root@hda .vnc]#
May it be possible to automatically remove the file from the disk? It maybe possible to write a script and to let it run with cron. The log file itself doesnt contain any important data:

Code: Select all

[root@hda .vnc]# tail -n 50 hda.home.lan\:4.log 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message 27/10/2012 22:59:17 Authentication deferred - ignoring client message [root@hda .vnc]#
The script could look like that:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash /sbin/service vncserver stop # doesnt work; please correct; or: /usr/libexec/vino-server stop # doesnt work too rm -rf /home/name/.vnc/name-log.file start vino
It may be a good idea to correct this as this log-file consumes all the drive space :(

And not every Amahi-User can find the cause.

Is this from using the Amahi VNC app? I checked my log and do not have anything similar. We have not heard of problems from other uses, so could be an isolated incident?

Might be work filing a bug just in case.

Hmm.. I've used Vino for another user some time ago. But according to the log entries it seems like Vino writes several lines per minute.

Yes; but at first I will wait for Amahi 7, as I use f14 at the moment. In case I will see the same problem with Amahi 7 on f17 I will report the problem.

Is vino installed by Amahi VNC or Amahi? I do not have it installed on my system. If it's a user installed add on, then might consider contacting the author. Does not seem to be Amahi related.

Hmm..? "installed by Amahi VNC or Amahi"

The vino-server comes with f14/f17/Ubuntu12.02 onboard. I have installed the App "Amahi VNC" and after some mounths the log file used too much drive space.

But never mind, its a known bug from Vino.
I do not have it installed on my system.
really? Well, in case your HDA is headless.

But in case you have installed Gnome on F14/F17/Ubuntu12 it will come with Vino. Yoou can find it (Ubuntu12.04 Unity) here:
System > Preferences > Remote Desktop

Just an idea from my self:
Its IMHO better to use freeNX as VNC-Server. Because of the performace and secure connection (ssh/public key). Why not replacing vino with freeNX?

I meant Amahi VNC or Ubuntu LOL As for being installed on my system, it appears it is there. I just never used it or knew it was there.

Hi, I just wrote a post in the forums of what I found to be the root cause of this issue. In my logs it appeared as if what caused the log file to grow so large was a brute-force attack. The log filling up is a result of the failed attempts to authenticate to your system's VNC server. After a certain number of failed attempts it appears as if the VNC server just starts rejecting the attempted connections without giving them a chance to authenticate (which is good). Luckily, if these are still happening then most likely they haven't hacked you yet. Check out my post if you are interested.

Thank you very much for the explanation. But nevertheless its better to use something like freeNX instead of Vino. freeNX has a lower bandwidth usage and is much more secure (it uses ssh).
