I would like to run Amahi on a spare desktop computer that I have in my bedroom. I DO NOT want to use it's DNS or DHCP capabilities, though, for a couple of reasons. The first is that I can't connect it via ethernet to my router. (I know that the wireless is officially unsupported, but I'm willing to take my chances.) My router is in a shared area of my house, and I can't move it to the bedroom, or move the computer to the router. Furthermore, I have DD-WRT on my router, and am completely happy with its DHCP and DNS functions.
My first question is this: How do I do the initial setup without using DHCP and DNS? Do I have to set it up as though Amahi is going to be providing DHCP and DNS and then turn it off? Or is there a way to set it up out of the box with those turned off?
Secondly, my router is running two SSIDs--a physical interface and a virtual interface. As it stands, the ip range for the physical interface is in the 192.168.1.x range, and the virtual interface is in 192.168.2.100-149. In DD-WRT, the router's ip address is 192.168.1.1, and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0; the local DNS and Gateway are left blank.
What should I put for the existing network gateway and the fixed ip address for the HDA in the initial Amahi setup? I would prefer for it to connect on the virtual SSID (the 192.168.2.x).
Thanks,
LDL
Complicated Install
Re: Complicated Install
You would have to install with the DHCP and DNS enabled, then turn them off. Leave the DNS on so the HDA can resolve apps to itself. It will not hurt the network.
As for the DHCP, there is guidance in the wiki for turning it off. In Ubuntu it's not a simple stop the server process.
As for which network to use, that's your choice. I am not sure how this will all work, but as you mentioned you realize it's unsupported. We cannot help much, but maybe you can help us by documenting your successes and failures in the wiki with this set up.

Re: Complicated Install
Thanks. What should I put for my gateway and hda ip address?
Also, I've been running into another problem. I have installed Ubuntu and Amahi according to the instructions, but when I go to open the hda in firefox, I am taken to hda.com. I think it might be due to the fact that when I install, I keep getting a message that says:
bash: line 42: /urs/bin/hda-install: no such file or directory
I have installed three times and gotten this each time. Any idea what might be causing this, and how to fix it?

Re: Complicated Install
Hello,
I would think you would want to use the primary router IP as the Gateway and IP would be what ever you choose for the HDA. You can try the virtual setup, but not sure if it will work. This is a non-standard setup, so limited support or guarantee it will work.
It seems that the install may not have went smoothly. Do you have good connectivity? Might want to check the hda-install log in the /root folder.
I presume you are following the guidance on http://docs.amahi.org. Hope we can sort it out.
