Using DNS and DHCP from SBS2011?

Postby egnurg » Fri Jul 20, 2012 12:01 pm

Hi,
I have a small network with a microsoft server SBS2011 which acts as DNS- and DHCP-Server and also Domain-Controller.

Starting my test-machine with Amahi in the same network the DHCP on the Microsoft-Server stops and I get some problems with my computers which can´t join my domain any more.

SBS2011 needs to be DNS and DHCP-Server.

Disabling DHCP and DNS on my amahi-machine as in the Wiki does not work, it is always on again after rebooting.

Is it possible to run amahi in a network with MS SBS2011?

I want to test Linux/Amahi/Zarafa but I need the SBS2011-network working.

There is a strong possibility that it won't work. You do not have to disable DNS on the HDA, only DHCP. Are you using Ubuntu or Fedora? It makes a difference in how DHCP is disabled.

I use ubuntu 12.04.
did hda-change-dns 192.168.5.1 192.168.5.200
(.1 is my sbs, .200 amahi) and it seems to work.
But how can I switch off DHCP-Server?
Switched it off via web-interface and disabled watchdog but it starts again after some time causing DHCP on my SBS to stop.

The only way to stop the DHCP server from starting on boot is to comment out the start on runlevel [2345] in /etc/init/isc-dhcp-server.conf.

This is a known bug in Ubuntu and this solution seems to work. So once you make this change, stop the DHCP and it should stay stopped. You can also rename the file in /etc/monit/conf for DHCP server as .bak as well if one exists.

That should do it.

thank you, seems to work.
Restarted the system 3 times and now it´s running 5 hours with DHCP from my SBS2011 :D

Only in the setting-page in my web-explorer it shows DHCP still as running.

Zarafa is also working on the machine so it´s almost a replacement for my SBS2011.

Only missing integration for Zarafa which adds the settings for eMail when adding user to amahi

Good to hear. We have looked at that app in the past, but not sure if it was something we could easily package for Amahi. We will take another look one day, but for now creating new apps is not a priority. We are still working out the bugs with Ubuntu and then will begin Fedora 17 for Amahi.
