New Install, not sure if I set my paritions properly

Postby bdoell88 » Fri Feb 17, 2012 2:13 am

Here is what I got.

Drive 1 = 80GB
500MB boot partition
12.4GB /root LVM
7.7GB /home LVM
8GB /swap LVM
44GB /var/hda/files partition (landing zone)

Drive 2 = 500GB ext4 partition in greyhole drive pool
Drive 3 = 250GB ext4 partition in greyhole drive pool
Drive 4 = 250GB ext4 partition in greyhole drive pool

I realize now that my landing zone is way too small and that I dont need that much space for /home as I am not using this as a workstation. I also have a 1TB drive and 640GB drive that I will be eventually adding to the drive pool once I get it all set up nicely how I want it.

I've just got this thing up and running and doing testing so now is the time to find out what I'm doing wrong and get it optimized properly.

What I was thinking was that my motherboard has a USB port on the motherboard itself, so could I not just plug in my 8GB usb drive (I could get a 16GB drive if 8GB isn't enough) and reinstall Fedora14 and Amahi on that and then put the swap and landing zone on the 80GB drive? That way I get a bigger landing zone.

Any suggestions on what would be the best way to partition my drives? I've read about people putting the landing zone in the greyhole pool but I can't seem to understand how that would work? I also want to consider that in the future I would be wanting to replace all the drives with 2 TB drives.

Another question I have is, can I make use of the the second ethernet port on my motherboard to gain any performance?

Thanks in advance!

I would recommend you use the 80GB partition for the OS. Then mount one 250MB for /var/hda/files that way you have more space for shares. The remaining drives would be for Greyhole replication.

As for using a second NIC for speed, I would say no. Amahi will only recognize eth0 without some serious manipulation of things, which could ultimately break the HDA. Best to disable that NIC if possible. I am no networking export, but that is been my experience.

Using the 80GB just for the OS would seem to be a waste of space though, wouldn't it?

Not really in my opinion. If you trim things down too small, you will have problems later on. Considering you have so many drives to add, didn't seem like a big deal to use the 80GB solely for the OS.

Another option is to use the space you have left for an extra drive for a share. Key thing is if you put your landing zone on a different drive, that does not leave anything else to really put on the 80GB besides the OS. The shares typically all live in /var/hda/files by default.

Hmm... maybe I will just have to replace the 80GB with a bigger 250GB drive. How would I go about just cloning the 80GB drive onto a 250GB drive and then just expanding the landing zone partition? And then is it possible to change the size of the LVMs? Doing that I can maximize the amount of drives I have in the pool, which is kind of critical to me.

Thanks for your help!

You can use a backup program like Clonezilla Live CD to do that. As far as the LVM, I recommend if you are gonna use Greyhole that you do not use LVM.

The wiki has some guidance about removing drives from LVM, but not sure that applies to all drives. If you choose to reinstall, check out the wiki for how to do so without LVM.

I reinstalled it on one of my 250GB drives. Much better. Now I just need to get some larger hard drives.

Thanks!
