yum update caused kernel panic

Postby bt107 » Thu Jan 05, 2012 5:56 pm

I did a dumb thing last night. I ran yum update to update Fedora 14 and now the server won't boot. I get a message something like "Kernel panic - not syncing :VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (0,0)"

Is there anything I can do other than a re-install?

I don't know the specifics on how to fix it, but I have seen solutions via google. Might try that before resorting to a reinstall. Doing a

Code: Select all

yum udpate
should not cause problems.

Solved it from this post at Fedora forum. Apparently the update was interrupted which left it in an unfinished state. Booting with the Fedora DVD, then editing the grub.conf file worked. I then forced the kernel install. All these steps were in the Fedora forum thread.

Awesome. This would be something good to add to the wiki. Do you have the time to add it? We would greatly appreciate it.
