workgroup question

Postby djchamkila » Tue Jan 03, 2012 1:21 pm

I guess since I am newbie still I will post my question in here.

I have successful installation of Amahi. However when I try to access \\HDA from my work laptop at home which has WIN 7 I do not get directed to AMahi. after reading shares troubleshooting guide seems like I should have same workgroup name as Amahi which is home.com. However on my work laptop I am member of Domain companyname.LAN instead of workgroup . Is this my problem ? I changed from domain to workgroup and I was not able to log onto my laptop. Had to go to IT to get it fixed back to companyname.LAN domain. So do I have any other option ?
I think this might also resolve my other problem which I posted on VPN Section.

You may have to use HDA Connect software and VPN into your HDA. There could be some other issues with firewall too with your company that is causing issues.

Did you try accessing shares using \\hda.home.com\sharename?

I am using HDA connect software to VPN into my amahi server
I just tried \\hda.home.com\docs but no luck.
when I type hda I get redirected to http://guide.opendns.com/main?url=hda&w=1920&h=887

Is the network by chance for your work the same subnet as your home network? For example, 192.168.1.x. If this is the case, then VPN will not work.

It is a known issue with Fedora 14 VPN software.

so I just tried from my personal laptop and VPN worked like charm. So nothing is wrong with my installation or Amahi server its just something to do with my work laptop. I am not able to change my workgroup. is there any other setting I should be looking to change ?

Great news. Have to looked at the wiki for accessing shares with Windows 7?

http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Shares_troubleshooting
•In at least Windows 7, we have observed that the operating system tries to use a "Domain" of the name of the computer, which is wrong! Try typing this in the Username field:
YOURWORKGROUP\username
So, if your username is jdoe and the workgroup is HOME, try HOME\jdoe

•Some windows clients for some reason may require the whole DNS path, so if your internal domain is, say, home.com, try:
\\hda.home.com

Mr Bigfoot I am happy customer as of now. My shares are working as well on VPN. I had to map them \\hda.home.com\docs instead of \\hda\docs

Big thanks to everyone who replied. I will donate some money as well.
