Little confused or a lot lol

Postby ockertom » Sat Nov 26, 2011 5:28 pm

Hi I just built the amahi seemed to be fairly easy, building the actual raid was fun lol, I can transfer files from my win 7 to the server, no probs, what I cant seem to figure out is how do I watch movies from my television through this? I have usb and hda fittings on the tv, what sort of media player do I need or is this supposed to be just a fileserver? I expect there is more to explore but I have tried heaps and I really dont want to attach the vga cable and use it like a puter, because I can attach it through my main comp and watch movies from it I like this program its nice, but if its only goin to be a backup device then I will go and buy a media player with hd thanks for any advice or links to where I should be :)

I'm not sure what you mean by "hda fittings", but as long as your TV has a NIC (network interface card) or wifi, you can use http://www.amahi.org/apps/dlna. DLNA is a standard that is used to synchronize media sharing technologies. On Amahi, it's a set it and forget it app.

I have a year old Samsung TV with an ethernet connection which when connected all I do is click the "media play" button on my remote and I can access all my videos/movies right there on the TV. Flawless integration.

If you do not have internet access on your tv, you would need a media connector to deliver the content by-proxy to your your TV from Amahi. An xbox would be a perfect example. 2 birds 1 stone...get a media connector to watch your movies AND be able to play Modern Warfare 3.

2 solutions..

1) have a device for playing DLNA content from your server. PS3 and XBox would do the job. They would see your server's folders of media if you've setup DLNA properly.
This is how I stream everything from my HDA to my TV... via my PS3

2) connect your HDA directly to the TV... via the video ports... to your TV if it has a VGA or DVI input. Then you can just watch from the desktop. Alternatively you can connect any networked computer to your TV and stream that way.
