Yeah I have installed Transmission on my Amahi server. Here's a list of steps but it probably needs cleaning up and elaboration:

1) Install Transmission using "yum install transmission" as root.
2) Go to System -> Administration -> Startup Applications
3) Add a new entry to the Startup Programs list: Name = "Transmission"; Command = "transmission-gtk %F"; Comment = whatever.
4) Open Transmission and go to Edit -> Preferences.
5) Set everything up as you want, but there's a few specific options that must be set. In the "Torrents" tab, tick "Automatically add torrents from" and choose a folder in your shares that you can drop torrent files into from other PCs. Tick "Start when added", "Move .torrent file to trash" and untick "Show options dialog".

In the "Web" tab, tick "Enable web client". You might want to tick "use authentication" and choose a username and password too.

Image

6) To control your torrents you have two options:

a) Go to "http://hda:9091/" in a web browser. Replace "hda" with your HDA's IP address if you haven't set up DNS etc.
b) Install Transmission Remote GUI from here on all of your network PCs that you want to control your torrenting from.

Option (a) is simpler but option (b) gives you far more control. If you went for option (b) there's some more steps!

7) Open Transmission Remote GUI and go to Tools -> Connection Options.
8) Make a new connection and call it whatever you want. Set "Remote Host" to "hda", "Port" to "9091", and enter the username and password you set in step 5. Leave these blank if you didn't set a username and password.

Image

9) In the "Paths" tab, enter any path mappings you want. For example, "/var/hda/files/torrents=\\hda\torrents" will let the program properly access the local folder "/var/hda/files/torrents" by accessing your "torrents" share. This is required for things like "Open containing folder" to work.

Image

10) Click OK and then go to Tools -> Options.
11) Customise this as you wish.
12) Go to Tools -> Transmission Options.
13) These options should match what you set on your HDA.

Now if you want to add a torrent, there are 3 methods:

a) Copy/download a .torrent file to the folder you specified under "Automatically add torrents from" in step 5.
b) Open a .torrent file with Transmission Remote GUI.
c) Open a .torrent file (or enter a torrent URL) in the Web Interface.

DragonQ,

Would you mind adding this to the wiki? I have created a place for the guidance at the bottom of the page. Might move it up later.

http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Transmission

It will be more beneficial to the users and easier to find. We would greatly appreciate it!

What is the difference between the Transmission "one-click app", and installing it manually; aside from $$$?

Not a major difference. There would be no dashboard link on the main page, no server listed in the Server tab, and the share for torrents would need to be manually created. There are a few settings that are different as well.

The point of the "one-click" is to make this all automatic for users. For those who have some linux experience and want to dabble with the manual install, it's documented in the wiki. For those who just want it installed, the "one-click" app is available.

If transmission can do it, I would imagine Deluge can be made to do this... I have it running on my HDA at boot to give me a network-accessible torrent client.

How could I add an app icon in the dashboard formy Deluge app so I don't have to goto http://hda:[delugeportnumber]

It it done for transmission when installed as a one-click app. The Amahi version of transmission is a customized RPM version, not the native Fedora one.

There currently is no simple way for a user to add an app to the dashboard that is not installed via Amahi one-click. This feature was suggested and is in the queue for future platform enhancements.

If you make a web app link, you can manually modify the .conf file to make the link redirect to hda:portnumber. Its not that complicated, but it will not yield an icon on the main dashboard. IT will however allow you to enter http://deluge and arrive at the web app screen for the app.

By the way, we also have Deluge as a one-click app in beta. It has not been thoroughly tested, but it worked the last time I checked.
