Web-Apps v Apps

Postby ezybee » Mon Apr 27, 2009 11:19 pm

Ok so I installed Amahi and implemented a few web-apps such as gallery2 & jinorza before one-click and the visibility from the dashboard. Applications tab shows these applications as "Available" where it should list them as installed. There must be a file/db that tracks this. Without un-installing and re-installing (and losing all settings, mods, changes, etc) is there a way to "correct" the application list to reflect that these applications are in fact installed, operational and available for listing on the dashboard? (This is likely a repeated post - but I didn't find others)

hi ezybee,

very interesting question. you are an advanced user!

webapps are different than apps. webapps are a building block of apps. same thing with dbs.

apps may have a webapp, a db, some program (an rpm package), some dependencies, etc.

without getting too technical (which i'm happy to, if you want), it's not possible to convert a webapp into an app automatically.

what you could do is save the settings (probably the DB, maybe other things) for the webapp you want to "convert", then install the app and manually load the settings/db that you saved.

however, .... you don't need to install the apps if you are happy with the webapps as you installed them.

one benefit of apps is that they appear in the dashboard, yes. that's a tough one. there is no way to show webapps in the dashboard automatically now. :(

you can bookmark your webapps, or perhaps so as far as hacking the dashboard to add your own links?

we'd like the dashboard to be more dynamically programmable, for sure.

Thanks for reply - feel free to get very technical
Where is the web-app mapping from true subdirectory to the alias place?

using jinzora as example:
http:\\jinzora maps to /var/hda/web-apps/jinzora2

seems one could move (rename) subdir to "save_my_webapp" : /var/hda/web-apps/jinzora2 becomes /var/hda/save-web-apps/jinzora2
run web-app uninstall or delete record in database for that web-app
install application
move new jinzora application dir to "save_default_application_install" : /var/hda/apps/jinzora2 becomes /var/hda/save_apps/jinzora2
move, symbolic link, or copy "save_my_webapp" subdirectory to location new application is pathed to : /var/hda/save-web-apps/jinzora2 is copied to /var/hda/apps/jinzora2
and have the best of your setup plus listed in dash

long term - the iGoogle idea or a simple Move from Web-App to App button/pulldown/option might do the trick

thoughts?

this is like programming in assembly. fraught with risks that something will break and may hose your setup. i strongly advise against this unless you are willing to look at source code.

if you really want to do this, you are much better off saving your data and settings and installing the app, the loading the data and the settings in there.

there is one app in testing called phpMyBackup that will let you easily backup the DBs in your system. it's in testing (if you come to the irc channel we can assign it to you for testing for some time). if you can install all these webapps by hand, you can do phpmybackup too, i'm sure :)

i feel terrible that i cannot help you much being such an early user and installing webapps, but i honestly believe it's best to not touch the internal structures :(

the idea of some option to "package" a webapp is interesting ... hmmm ...

something like that, yes.

someone is working on packaging two apps in that vein, portaNEO (enterprise) and P.O.S.H. (personalizable portal).

not sure we can use these as replacement for the dashboard.

for me the biggest thing could be for my family to see what are the latest movies added and latest music added.

a little module like that would go a long way already.

we need ruby coders :)

first - lol - so much fun alpha/beta testing one has to keep a jolly spirit

I'll try "migrating" an web-app to app so it shows in dashboard and will post the trials and tribulations

as for phpmybackup - been running it on the amahi server since initial install so backups are all good to go

as for RoR - I uninstalled my IDE in frustration some months ago got a bit tired of learning YAPL after all the various code work stemming from too many late nights - I was hoping amahi was fully baked and I could be a bum for a change - which RoR version/IDE are y'all using and I'll see what I can come up with

as for IRC - I'll pass for personal reasons - but I don't mind testing various pieces.
