Well, I forgot to release/renew. Need to try that.

In Computer properties, went to change computer name, changed the workgroup name, then clicked "More", where I'm asked to "Chnage primary DNS suffix when domain membership changes", to which I entered OAKWOODROAD.NET. After clicking OK, the computer name is listed as <computername>.oakwoodroad.net.

Still wondering if/where I should see oakwoodroad.net on the hda. There's no setting at all for it on the any tab within the settings page. The only place I see the domain name is in /etc/samba/smb.conf and https://amahi.org/user.

I'll check again about accessing shares via a browser and windows explorer; problem is I only have short time window when the family WinClient is available to me to work on.

I've got the time and determination to work thru this with outside assistance.

Hello,

Make sure you only change the workgroup name in Windows 7. Do not change anything else. Amahi DHCP will take care of the rest. That may be your issue.

You won't see the domain on the HDA, except where it's shows DHCP lease if you assign clients static IPs. Don't get too wrapped up in the DNS stuff. Leave it as is, but do set the workgroup and make your client use a static ip.

OK, back to the Winclient. I think I have listed all the relevant configuration settings and documented all the mis-behavior

From the Win7 Computer Properites page:
computer name: hedwig
full computer name: hedwig
workgroup: OAKWOODROAD
did a restart of the computer and ipconfig /renew

DNS and DHCP are turned off on my router. I haven't made any changes to the hda other than install mc and delete the default *.jnl files in /var/named/dynamic in order to allow me to access http://hda. (New ones have reappeared.)

From amahi.org/user:
Nickname: dumbledore
Home Domain oakwoodroad.net
Network 192.168.0.*
HDA IP Address 192.168.0.15
Network Gateway 192.168.0.1

From the hda homepage (logged in as a non-root user w/ admin priveledges):
Setup > Settings
Advanced Settings: Checked
Servers Running: Apache Web Server, DNS Server, DHCP Server, MySQL DB Server, File Server (Samba), Amahi Dynamic DNS Updater, OpenVPN Server, Greyhole - all have the default configuration options set

Shares > Shares
Books \\hda\Books
Docs \\hda\Docs
Movies \\hda\Movies
Music \\hda\Music
Pictures \\hda\Pictures
The following options are set for all shares:
Visible, All users, Writeable, Location /var/hda/files/<sharename>

Shares > Settings
Workgroup Name: OAKWOODROAD

Apps Installed
Webmin, eXtplorer

Additionally, I created two users through the users tab, so the tab shows three users: Admin, <admin_2> and <non-admin>. Both of these users have directories listed in the hda /home directory

Now the behavior
From a browser
http://hda takes me to the hda login page from which I can login as any of the three listed users

http://webmin takes me to a webmin login pag:
Login to Webmin
You must enter a username and password to login to the Webmin server on hda.
Username
Password
Remember login permanently?

Entering any of the usernames listed above and the passwords for those that let me login to the hda takes me to:
webmin/session_login.cgi

with the following content:
Proxy Error

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request POST /session_login.cgi.

Reason: DNS lookup failure for: hda:10000session_login.cgi

Apache/2.2.13 (Fedora) Server at webmin Port 80

http://extplorer takes me to an extplorer login page having an extplorer icon and logo along with a username/password/language challenge

Entering any of the three username/password combinations leads to a pop up:
Error
Login failed, Try again.
OK

From Win7 Computer menu (the win file explorer)
When first opened, the network menu shows all my LanClients, but not HDA. I can, however get to hda by entering \\hda in the address bar. After doing so, hda is listed as one of the network computers and the file space shows the five default hda shares (Books, Music, Docs, Movies and Pictures) as well as a folder for the non-root admin user, but not for the non-admin user.

Double-clicking on one of the hda share names calls a dialog:
Windows cannot access \\hda\<sharename>
Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose".
Error code: 0x80070035
The network path was not found.

Double clicking on the folder of the non-root admin user opens the folder to show a folder called Desktop and .bash_history, .bash_logout, .bash_profile and .bashrc. I have verified that these are the entire contents of the non-root admin user's /home directory on the hda. No password challenge is needed to open this folder on Win7

I can get to the home directory of the non-admin user by entering \\hda\<username> in the address bar. I am presented with a Win username/password challenge. Entering that username/password opens that users hda home directory. Going back to the top level for hda in the filemanager now shows the default shares as well as both added users.

After closing the file manager and reopening, hda still does not appear in the list of network clients, but after entering in the address bar it does appear. This time the folders for both the new users are shown without having to do anything with the address bar. Entering them, as expected, requires a username and password.

Ok, now I better understand your problem. The apps do not have login credentials for the HDA users. When you install an app, it typically lists login credentials and often special instructions for that app. You need to use those credentials. For example, AjaXplorer is admin/admin, Webmin is root and your root password.

The issue with the HDA not showing up in the network clients is typical for linux machines, at least in my experience. Don't get hung up on this as its a Windows issue and irrelevant to accessing shares. The best ways to access shares is using the \\hda\sharename via the run dialog box. As I mentioned previously, you can also map the shares as network drives in Win 7. That's what I do for the ones I use frequently.

For those that you have tried to access via \\hda\share and could not access it, recommend you try \\hda.oakwoodroad.net\share as noted in the wiki guidance. That might help. You should receive a pop up for user name and password unless you told Windows to remember the credentials. In which case if you entered the wrong credentials, it will remember them in that state and state access denied.

Hope that helps.

OK...some progress.

For extplorer, it was indeed not knowing the correct username/password combo. I am now able to get to it.

However for webmin, using root, admin, or the admin-enabled user with a variety of passwords still leaves me with the Proxy error and unable to login. Recall, that I get the proxy error extremely rapidly, less than a second, where as any other activity involving accessing the hda seems to take 5-10 seconds. I also get the same rapid error on LinClients...don't know if that helps.

As for the shares, http://hda.oakwoodroad.net/<sharename> first takes me to the hda login page and then to the hda home page showing the hda users. Going to the shares page and clicking on the link (\\hda\<sharename>) also takes me back to the hda home page. Trying to access http://hda.oakwoodroad.net/<sharename> from the window in which I've already logged into still takes me back to the hda home page.

So in short, I still can't get to Webmin and I can't get to any of the default shares, either through a browser or through the windows file manger, (although I can by going through extplorer).

I just realized that even though I can get into extplorer, I can't actually do anything. If I try to write files to any of the drives, I get a "File upload failed." error, so maybe I'm still not getting appropriate access.

And also...
Tried to map a network drive to \\hda.oakwoodroad.net\<sharename>

First windows attempts to connect, then "Windows cannot access http://hda.oakwoodroad.net/<sharename>

Error code 0x80070035
The network path was not found.

It offers to diagnose the problem and in doing so says that "hda.oakwoodroad.net" exists but Windows can't find "<sharename>"

Same problem as when I attempt to access a share using the address bar in the file manager.

For webmin, try http://hda:10000 and see if that works. If so, the .conf file may need adjusted.

As for shares, you cannot access them via the web browser. Only Windows Explorer or the Run As box. If \\hda does not work in either, then you may have other issues with the plug. I am unsure what you have changed on it if anything, but might be best to reinstall if you cannot sort this out.

The more you modify the hda and permissions, the deeper hole you can dig yourself into. Might be good if you come by the IRC and whoever there might be able to assist. Sometimes live help works better.

More progress...http://hda:10000 does allow me to login to webmin as root, but not as another admin-enabled user.

Any thoughts about what config file needs changing?

If I end up on the IRC, what would be the best way to describe the problem?

Ok, I don't think you understand how apps and users work. The users for the HDA are no way tied to the apps. All apps are independent and any users in the app are pre-set or you need to create your own in the app.

The users in the HDA are primarily tied to the shares and access to the dashboard to get to apps. Do not confuse the two. If you want the app users to be the same as your hda users, you can create them in the apps that way.

Webmin is no different. In that app, you can set it to work with other users, but need to config it via Webmin interface. For help, suggest you read the documentation for Webmin.
