Can Amahi be used to replace router and WLAN access point?

Postby priority » Sat Mar 26, 2011 9:01 am

I need to upgrade my WLAN router (due unstability) and NAS storage (due lack of capacity and DLNA support).

I was planning to buy separete WLAN router and NAS storage, but I started to wonder whether Amahi server could replace these both? Can Amahi act as router and WLAN access point? If yes, I could build a home server based on Atom D525 (1,8Ghz dual core) PC with WLAN and 2 LAN interfaces. Attached you find picture of proposed configuration.

An comments, would this be feasible?

you *could* use Amahi to do that, however, it's not a supported configuration -- you need to know how to do this (and how to write it in a wiki HOWTO :) )

many people want to do this, or a subset of this, but it's hard in general and not something we can official support (way too many pitfalls and configuration). also, keep in mind that one mistake with the firewall and your data/apps could be exposed to the internet.

the one piece of advice i'd give if you want to pursue this is this: use eth0 for the internal LAN. that way Amahi will work as is by default.

you'd get a lot of love and followers (priority followers?!) if you put what extra you need to do besides an Amahi install in a HOWTO in the wiki. :)
