Is a Pentium 4 3ghz with 512 mb of ram insufficient to run fedora 14/amahi well?
When I installed fedora and amahi, everything was copasetic. Today however doing everyday activities was very slow.
Then I added a PCI 4-port SATA card and four hard drives, turned them all into a storage pool. Didn't make things better or worse.
Now I'm copying files over my LAN and CPU utilization is over 75%, ram usage is about 33%. Network throughput isn't steady at all... it spikes to ~25 MB/s before it drops back down to zero for about 5 seconds, then it spikes to ~25 MB/s then tails off. Music files are approximately 4 MB. Sometime transfers were even slower... like 3MB/s. Both NIC's are GigE with a 5 port gigabit Netgear WAP/router in between them.
If it's too slow I'll deal. But if there's a solution I'd love that too.
thanks
My Amahi box is running wicked slow
Re: My Amahi box is running wicked slow
i figured out why the transfers are stopping and starting... my var/hda/files/ is only 6 gb and it fills up while copying, then greyhole clears it, then it fills up again.
direct copies to my (non-pooled) SSD are much faster.
So the copy problem is a greyhole problem, which i'll troubleshoot tomorrow.
Still doesn't explain why the machine is so slow when i'm not copying.
thanks.

512 is a little low. I think we recommended 512, but yes, that's the minimum.
Also, if you copy a lot of data, the kernel allocates some of that for buffers, which puts immediate pressure for the rest of the memory used for all the processes in place (samba, apache, amahi dashboard, etc. etc.).

if I add a gig it should be solid?
Re: My Amahi box is running wicked slow
I would think that would be a great boost. I was running 1GB and 2GB on boxes for a while and it was fairly quick.

Added another Gig of RAM and amahi is flying.
Thanks guys.
