App links point outside of network

Postby thomasps » Sun Mar 13, 2011 6:59 pm

My links for apps likes:
http://jinzora
http://transmission
fail to point to the app but goes to an outside site (openDNS) saying "You tried to visit transmission.speidel.ca, which is not loading"

I also cannot connect to my network from the outside (posted in a different thread).

What could be the problem?

There could be many things going on here. First of all, is your router DHCP and DNS server turned off? Your clients must point to your HDA for those features for everything to work properly.

Access your HDA outside your local network is not enabled by default. It's best to use VPN for this connection. This can be achieved with hdaconnect for Windows and OpenVPN for Linux clients. See the wiki for more info:

However, if you want to use the dynamic DNS then follow the steps in the wiki as noted below:

Hope this helps.

So if I do not use HDA as the DHCP and the DNS, the features do not work???

That is unfortunate.

I have a Cisco ASA 5520 as my firewall, DHCP / DNS and I need to turn that off to use a home built server for it? not sure if I like that.

Thnaks so much for the pointers. You don;t want me to get started on the lousy router I _have_ to use.
-I'm positive I turned off DHCP on the router
-Need to double check the DNS entries - Question: can't I just point the DNS on my router to the IP of the HDA machine?

Oh and thanks for the link to accessing the HDA from outside-something I had been lloking for for days!

In order for the app links to work (i.e. http://jinzorra), you need to point your client machines dns to your hda machine.
