Is it really this hard?

Postby kcossabo » Mon Mar 07, 2011 5:28 am

:geek: Coming from a Windows Home Server and FreeNAS world.

I installed Fadora 14 3 times, one time I missed a step in the instructions  , second time it looked like Amahi failed :x , then reinstall, follow the 'install failure' section.... (I especially like instructions that state, continue installing like you normally would  , WHAT home owner normally installs F14)

Turn off DHCP

Adding drives is like ROCKET Science :ugeek: , did that have a pool.

Now I learn that I can not use the Amahitunes that the instructions recommends I use, as it is BETA, and I can not use :o ?????

It seems that this is a dead end project :?: . If I was a Unix expert :ugeek: , would I need Amahi? If I am not a Unix Expert :| , I can not install Amahi? OH, an the instructions (though VERY GOOD), put a version that will not run the applications, that is the reason I started this.

So now I see if I can down grade  ? To access applications????? this sucks!!!!!!

Let me begin by saying this is not a dead project. It's obvious you are frustrated with your install experience. We are sorry to hear you are having such a difficult time.

We are diligently working to try and make this simpler but it takes time. We are a very small team of volunteers and the workload to keep Amahi going is quite overwhelming at times. Please understand this is no small feat.

There are many reasons that things did not go well. It could be the DVD download was corrupt. Its best to ensure you verify its good before proceeding with install. A missed step in the instructions as indicated. On occasion, connectivity issues have caused problems as well.

We appreciate feedback from users about install and can use any help one can offer to make the instructions better. If you are willing to help, that would be great.

As for Amahi Tunes being available, I understand your point of being told to install it and its not there. Coincidentally, Amahi Tunes has just been released live today.

You do not have to be a unix or linux expert, however some experience may be required for the advanced system changes that are needed after install. The wiki is a great source of help, but we all have different apprehension levels. What seems easy to understand for some may not be for others. We do our best to simplify these types of tasks.

If you continue to have problems, please feel free to drop by the IRC. There is always someone there who can assist. If you prefer posting here, that is fine too. We will do our best to assist. We hope you will give Amahi another shot.

thank you for the response.

I want this to work, I want an alternative to WHS, and will work to fill my knowledge gaps.

WRT the download corrupt, it was not, all the issues were around complexity, and novice user. Please take the feedback, as intended, feedback on a users experience (an I am not a 'novice')

As a home owner, I can so relate to this. I normally install Debian.
