Strange issues with networking -> DHCP

Postby grumpygamer » Wed Feb 16, 2011 4:24 pm

Ok, after a fresh install I turned the DHCP server off on the router.
AMAHI has the correct workgroup name but there are some strange things going on

1. No leases in the DHCP are shown.
If I flush renew release the lease appears for a limited amount of time, then disappears

2. No \\hda appears in the network folder where I can see al my other PCs
BUT I can access http:\\hda

3. If I manually type \\hda in a folder, I can view the shared folders (default installed ones with permissions set to everyone) but I am prompted user name and password
to access them

4. I tried inserting a static IP (and assigning it to a MAC address) but that seems to be completely ignored by the system, the target client gets some strange IP from somewhere.
I tried rebooting the machine, but no go.

Please HELP, this is looking grim...

This has been solved by rebooting all machines.

Now I still can't find how to access shared folders. I'll go and search the forums.
Sorry for wasting a thread.

You should be able to access shares from windows using \\hda in the run as box. Also, now that all machines have been rebooted, the HDA should appear in the network area.

Server appears correctly but I am prompted for a username and password for every share despite them being enabled for all users.

I have resolved this by using windows Credentials on 7 although it might not be the ideal solution.
i suppose shares should be automatically visible from everyone unless specified.
This doesnt work though.

That is correct. The user name and password prompt is typical behavior of Windows clients. There is an option there where you can tell it to remember, then you should not see it again.

This is Windows behavior that triggers this, not Fedora.

Actually this is occuring also on my XBMC live (linux/samba based) when I add a source it asks me for username and password so what I think triggers it IS Fedora or AMAHI.
Anyway adding a user and assigning that user to be able to view/write that share works on XBMC too.
Still not how it SHOULD work IMHO

bumpin this thread, because something weird is happening and i managed to track it.
If I release / renew my ip, when I try to access my shares again I am prompted for credentials although they are already set in the windows vault.
Also BEFORE renewing there is a "fedoraroot" folder (this is the root name); once I renew the IP this folder disappears and I am prompted to insert ID and PWD.

Any suggestions?

I think you're confusing "All Useres" / "Everyone" with "Guest Access"
On your Users tab on HDA, this is a list of all the users who will be able to gain access to the shares, but they need to log in with the password they specified. I too had to log in on Windows and my XBMC, but on Windows i checked the Remember my password box.
If you fancy writing some scripts, you could write a batch script to log you in
net use \\hda\music /user:NAME PASSWORD
This could sit in a script loaded on startup in windows, but be aware that you'll see the password.
If you want to use the script, put an @ in front of the command (to stop screen echo) then use a BATtoEXE converter.
You'll end up with an .EXE file that connects you to your HDA. I do this at work for a PC that is not part of the domain.

If you have a look at http://bugs.amahi.org/issues/show/692 you'll see that maybe Guest Access will be added.

Have a look at http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Share_Extra_Parameters if you wish to try adding guest ok=yes to your Extra Parameters.
