Fedora DVD really needed?

Postby rjwaldren » Mon Jan 17, 2011 7:26 pm

Is the DVD really a requirement for Amahi installation? Will CD#1 and internet access suffice?

Might be a silly question but I know apt - not yum/rpm. I assume the CD will pull in the additional needed packages from the repository during install so only a minimalist boot installer should be needed... Am I wrong. I'm starting to play with Amahi and would prefer not to have to D/L full DVD's of F12/14 if not needed - I don't use fedora for anything else.

After the boot, press <tab> to bring up changing the install startup and add:

askmethod

You can then provide a URL (like your own repo) of where the software is. I do this ALL the time.

i always do the net install. mind you, i always load minimal which can be a little trying to start of with ie the network isn't even started after a base install.

Playing around in a VM I managed to install from the Express CD, update it to F14 and get the beta running. Pretty slick, but I haven't played with it enough to determine if everything is working and all deps were resolved - Haven't noticed anything wrong though.

good datapoint!
we have not started to test the F12 -> F14 update process.

we have to "finish" f14 first.

So an official upgrade path is intended? I've been holding off until the next release, just in case there isn't.

I would hate to go with what I have now and find breakage down the road, when the official releaseis presumably so close.

What is the minimum Fedora instal required for Amahi? I'm trying to reduce the root size, and advice appreciated on what I can safely leave out of the installation.

cheers :)

The apps, like OpenOffice.
Email like Evolution.
Keep Firefoox.

Most other stuff is piddling. But drop games, sound, and graphics and video (but these you MIGHT need for apps, but yum will just install them if needed.)
