DNS Issues with 2 Amahi instances

Postby jbmia » Sun Jan 09, 2011 12:08 pm

Hi guys.. hoping someone can help me...

I've got 2 instances of Amahi... 9745.com is the primary server and has dns turned on... home.com is the secondary test box / torrent server and has dns turned off... Here's my issue.. When I try to access transmission.home.com, dns is routing me externally and I'm getting some web page coming up instead of the transmission UI... Can someone point me in the right direction here? I've tried setting up the hosts file on the 9745.com box to point transmission.home.com to that machines specific IP, but that doesn't seem to help...

Any assistance greatly appreciated..

host files are normally set on clients not servers although i've never ever tried to see what would happen if you put an entry into the dns server host file and the effect it would have. not sure if the host file on a dns server would overide the dns server although i don't see why not??
your clients are looking at hda1 and that hda is using the forwarders (opendns) to resolve. an option would be to register with opendns (free) and put an entry in there so when the hda1 uses the forwarder, it gets your internal hda2 address from there. alernatively, set the host file on the clients you are using to access the hda2.
again, as stated on this forum, it's a bit of a weakness with amahi as the answer is to set slave zones and with 2 hda's you could setup zone transfers also for redundancy etc. but that wasn't the orginal goal of amahi and does detract away from simple use. but i do believe somebody is working on this.

Thank you.. I'll try the opendns option... I tried updating hosts on Amahi and on clients without success.. but it might be the syntax I'm using.. not sure.. Any suggestions in that regard.. for example, how would the forwarding work if if my client hosts file were formatted as follows:

192.168.1.10 hda.home.com
192.168.1.10 transmission.home.com

It would seem to me that keying transmission.home.com would then just open the HDA, since it's just routing to that IP address.. Can you provide any suggestions on how to key entries to the host files in order to ensure that the appropriate app is brought up with that apps url is keyed in the browser??

Can I key in something like to the hosts file:

192.168.1.10 home.com

so that if I key transmission.home.com it will bring up the transmission app??

Thanks,

not sure why your host file isn't working there.
simply add an ip to it, use tab and then the hostname as you have above.
eg 192.168.1.2 transmission.home.com (make sure there is a gap between the ip and hostname)
for good measure (although i'm not sure it will make a difference) do an ipconfig /flushdns to clear your dns cache.

the apache server on hda2 (home.com) will take care of the host headers so if you enter transmission.home.com, apache will forward you to that app.
