I've experimented alot the recent weeks trying to figure out the best distribution of linux for me. While i really like Amahi, i just can't make the switch to Fedora (i'm a windows guy). However, i also really like Ubuntu, where i have MakeMKV and Boxee installed (kickass programs btw!), which were hard to install under Fedora (boxee dosen't work.. i know it's Ubuntu). I also want to be able to add EMC2 to control a CNC i'm making.
So i really want to use Ubuntu, but Amahi has so much functionality as well. I see Ubuntu version is on a complete standstill, allthough some blogger had it working under lucid lynx. Is there some way to run Ubuntu and Fedora (Amahi) at the same time? Or do i have to discard Amahi alltogether and hope someone out there is willing to port it?
Ubuntu and Fedora 12 (Amahi) at the same time?
Re: Ubuntu and Fedora 12 (Amahi) at the same time?
Hello,
I am sorry to say that the move to Ubuntu for Amahi has pretty much slowed to a standstill. This was a project taken on by one of our more experienced users, however he has not had time to continue.
As it stands, we are a small team of volunteers who support Amahi and do not have cycles to work this effort without help. Currently, our primary mission is to get Amahi ready for Fedora 14 and maintain the Fedora 12 version.
The only way I can see you running both is to have separate boxes or run one inside a virtual machine on the other. This would be possible and each could function as its own separate system.
As with all choices in life, there are always trade offs. So if you really cannot do without Ubuntu, your choices to use Amahi are limited. Nothing is impossible, but we cannot support anything beyond install/configuration of Amahi with Fedora.
What is the functionality of the Ubuntu apps? Maybe we already have something similar or there is an app out there that we can add to Amahi to meet your needs.
Sorry I don't have a better answer, but at least you do have options.

Re: Ubuntu and Fedora 12 (Amahi) at the same time?
Hi
I can list them as short;
EMC2: a linux program to read/interpret gcode. Used to control CNC machines. Is used for Ubuntu and is precompiled in LTS versions..
makemkv: a program that can rip media from drives. I use it t store my blu rays on the pc.
Boxee: A frontend program that acts as a media player. It uses XBMC as base and adds functionality like apps and more accessable content on youtube, facebook and a llot of other cool stuff.
makemkv is the only one that i've been able to install under Fedora. EMC2 needs to be patched (some earlier fedora cores work - there are some custom made RTAI's for that) and Boxee is basically Ubuntu only. I don't know if any have tried using it on Fedora. If EMC could be ported, i could live with the rest being hard to figure out. Porting it to Fedora could be an easy task for some experienced developers, as there are instructions for fedora core 3 and 4. http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinf ... f=3&id=FC3
Then, boxee could run on a virtual machine.. i dunno how it works though. Can boxee access the data i would be putting on "the real" machine? - that is the Fedora distribution?
As a bonus question, can a bidding site like ebay (just on a much much smaller scale) be made using programs in Amahi and be hosted by the server? - can i use it to sell my stuff to registered customers (100-1000) by them bidding on it? Would be fun to make just to see if it can be done.

Re: Ubuntu and Fedora 12 (Amahi) at the same time?
Hello,
It is possible for a VM to access another machine. As for the Ebay store, anything is possible. There are web apps you could manually install to do some of those type functions. Unfortunately, that is a bit beyond the scope of Amahi.
You can expose a site outside your network, but you would need to build it. Unless you could use something like Drupal or Wordpress to meet your needs. There are lots of possibilities, just have to find what works best for you.

Re: Ubuntu and Fedora 12 (Amahi) at the same time?
Thanks for returning, bigfoot!
I know i'm being very ambitious, but would the tools provided with amahi be able to set up something similar? - i have not done much home page coding, so i know i'm facing a mountain. I just want t try it out for kicks and was interested in relation to Amahi because of the CMS applications - which i believe are building blocks that can be incorporated into the design.
There must be a good site that can explain and have a tutorial on how to do the things i want to test out..!
Again, thanks

Amahi will let you serve a home page or use one of our apps like I mentioned. Other than that, the rest is up to you. I am sure there is something out there that would work for you.

Re: Ubuntu and Fedora 12 (Amahi) at the same time?
Anima,
You can run an Ebay type site on Joomla. Joomla is a powerful CMC app that runs on Amahi.
For EMC2, I would have that on a dedicated box. You don't want anything interfering with a CNC while its running! I am currently evaluating both Mach3 and EMC2 to run my Hardinge/Omniturn CNC lathe. The requirements for running Linux is very low,so you should be able to round up an extra computer easily, I have eleven box's in my garage alone and four in the house. all running Ubuntu, except for two boxes running Fedora/Amahi. One Amahi box is for testing and the other runs my hone network(duh).
Remember the Amahi box OS is not the one you will be using every day.
