Had issues with install both Express CD and FC 12 DVD

Postby pploco » Tue Dec 14, 2010 12:05 pm

Express CD installation finishes -sort of, then breaks when trying to load for the first time. Comes up with an error and states that it needs to reboot, then gets in a reboot loop. Went into debug mode, tested network, followed all the troubleshooting recommendations, and found that the /var/hda-new-install.log there was an error about uninstalling "setroubleshoot..." that I should uninstall it by hand -which didn't work.

So I turned to the /root/hda-install.log and found a number of errors. Now this was a fresh Express CD headless install; No updates or changes had been made. I stumbled into a forum thread that suggested a downgrade option on an unrelated issue. I ran the suggested: yum downgrade hda-platform command and tada... Amahi installed and booted successfully.

I'm all about supporting development, but the latest "stable" version needs to go back to beta in my opinion. I should add that this was after I had attempted installing FC12 by itself and then the latest "stable" Amahi. That failed with similar results. :( <----me. Now, I'm no linux wizard by any stretch, but I've busted knuckles with the penguin for a long time and consider myself somewhat capable. If it takes me this long to work out the kinks, I can't imagine what others are experiencing.

Re: Latest "stable" release is broken

Not sure if you caught the title of the download, but the Express CD is beta. There is no stable version of Amahi other than the Fedora 12 Full DVD install. The Express CD is a beta project that we hope will evolve into a stable version in Fedora 14. BTW, there is no Express CD for Fedora 14 yet in case you were wondering.

We have not updated the Express CD in a while as we are diligently working to get Amahi ready for Fedora 14. If you would be so kind as to add to the wiki what you did to get it working, that would be greatly appreciated. Maybe add an area for troubleshooting or something so other users will benefit.

FYI: The Full Fedora 12 DVD install failed with the exact same results. I followed these instructions on the Amahi Wiki install main page:

Installation

See Installation instructions in your control panel at amahi.org <---followed these exactly and had issues.
Self-install: Alternative, unsupported installation instructions
Amahi on a VM: Installing Amahi in a Virtual Machine
Express CD: Headless all-in-one Install <----I see no place on the title of the Express CD download that states it is beta, but that's good to know.

I'm not trying to start flames here, just wanted to express some frustration. Once I have a chance to play with things a bit, I'll go back and document my findings.

When did you do the DVD install? We just made a fix to the platform late last night, so should have not been an issue today.

As for the beta part of Express CD, it is in the wiki. Not sure where you got your copy from, but see here http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Express_CD. The filename shows its beta. That's what I meant, not trying to poke ya in the eye LOL Just wanted to clarify it's status.

If the location you got it from does not indicate beta, please let me know so I can update it. I want to ensure users know its not stable.

Thanks for your patience and understanding. I hope you can try the DVD install again soon with positive results. As of today, it should install the correct platform without issues. If that is not the case, please report so we can investigate.

The install was first attempted on Friday, so that explains my issue with the full DVD install.

The location of the express install CD is: http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Express_CD. I've attached a screenshot - no real mention of beta anywhere. The actual file name doesn't indicate beta either.

Okay, I found it. The actual downloaded file says beta towards the end of the extension. I think beta should be indicated somewhere on the express install page itself. Not splitting hairs here, just think it may help mitigate the frustration.

So let me summarize what happened:
1. Friday, I attempted to run the full FC 12 DVD and had issues. Apparently a fix was made to the platform last night.
2. After numerous unsuccessful attempts, I decided to try the Express CD.
3. The Express CD ISO was downloaded from http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Express_CD. The actual downloaded file states that it is beta, but no indicators on the installation instructions state this (really should be changed).
4. Several installation attempts were made with the similar reboot/debug load
5. Checking the logs and trying different things, the downgrade script was finally run. This resolved the issue and allowed Amahi to install and setup correctly.

Agreed on adding the beta to the wiki page. I will take care of that. I am glad you got things working.
