Amahi as a "dumb" server

Postby MrGee » Tue Nov 30, 2010 7:39 am

I 'd like to use Amahi as a "dumb" server, but I cannot find instructions on how to accomplish this.
I have no need for a DNS nor DHCP server, my modem/router already does this and I cannot turn it off. I want Amahi to act as a
download & (streaming)fileserver, the webapplications need to be accessible from http://ipaddress:yyyy

Does anyone know how to do this?
I already turned off the DHCP & DNS services, but I cannot reach the web applications, I guess there is a mapping with the “IP:Port” and the DNS name somewhere

Any help is appreciated, thanks

There are tradeoffs for not using the Amahi DNS as documented here http://www.amahi.org/faq#is-dhcp-server-required. Recommend you also take a look at the wiki as it may offer some insight.

Yes I am aware of this, I can view the smb sharres through the IP address which is not a problem,
But I cannot access the applications, for example SabNZBd normally runs on http://<serverip>:8080/sabnzbd/
I’d like to do the same with an Amahi server.

At the moment I’m using a Ubuntu server, but Amahi is just more user friendly and easier to administer..
Just too bad I cannot get it to work the way I want…

Applications do not have url access of http://ip/sabnzbd for Amahi. All apps are http://sabnzbd or http://sabnzbd.home.com.

This is the way Amahi is designed. Not sure it would be easy to change.

Sorry, guess I misunderstood your intentions. I am sure it's possible, but not sure of how it would work with Amahi. I am not an experienced network guy, so can't be of much help. There may be a user who can though in the community.

I would recommend you stop by the IRC and ask. There is typically someone there who has the expereince and can help.

did you find a solution?
I just discovered and installed it, and it loos super, but i really don't want my server to run 24/7, as it consumes way to much power

See my bug 681 on how to REALLY disable DNS.

Also when you disable Samba, you still need to disable the nmb service.

I run a server with just about all services off, including OpenVPN and Greyhole. I use it as my Mail server. I have a number of Amahi apps running on it, the thing is that you CANNOT access the apps by IP address without changing the app conf files in /etc/httpd/conf.d; you have to know a little bit about Apache config to work with this.

If you have an internal DNS service you can set up an internal view and create CNAMEs for each app. This is what I do.

I **THINK** you need to add a servername entry that is specific to the IP address. I am just not sure, as I have not tested this.

BTW, I am signing off for the day and I may not be back until tuesday night.
