Ok, I'm making progress here. My MB does not have a "Halt on stops" setting, so the system can boot without a KB or a mouse.
I have installed Webvnc and it works very well....and quickly, too. I was surprised at how fast the connection is made. It's funny to think about logging into my HDA to play solitaire on it for a change.
I'm also impressed with CrashPlan. It doesn't slow my pc down at all even though it's running in the background. But why can't I see the info CrashPlan has stored when I look at the HD?

Now, I want to know more about having the server re boot after a power outage. I've set the bios to "On after power outage" but how do I get the server to enter a password by itself? If I take out user passwords will that work? After all, it's only a home server and no one is going to break into it so it doesn't need passwords...right? :?:

Ah, I see there already is a wiki for public hosting:

And it does not give any security warnings...

Surely there's an easier way.

It is a real challenge when you put up a public server and have web apps that really should NOT be public. NO WAY do you want phpmyadmin PUBLIC!!! Trust us if you have not used it. I also doubt if you want phpmybackup public.

You can use the .htaccess method to control access to apps you want to limit, but people can still peck at them. If you change the port and don't open that port, no way will the public even be able to peck at the security to those apps; they have to get 'inside' first.

So it depends on what you are protecting and what you are and plan to run on your server.

I may have a solution using an old kitchen under-cabinet TV. The tv has rca inputs so if I can find a video card with rca outputs then I could use this old tv as a monitor for my server. I could mount it under the shelf that the server is on. The screen is 7" diagonal but I would be able to log in as a user when the power blinks and turns my server off.

Now, where to get a cheap video card with rca outputs? Hmmm....
