SOLVED: Amahi vs Clean Linux

Postby nixel » Sat Oct 22, 2016 10:30 am

Hello, amahi community!

I am planning to turn my old PC into a home server+NAS, and only recently found out about amahi.

So far it looks great, but I have a few questions regarding it. I browsed through the FAQ but I still have questions, and I fell that it would be better to ask them all in one place.

1. The main question comes to this:  How does amahi "change" linux? Is it just a Fedora with server software pre installed? Or is it like a new OS with it's own benefits, limits and restrictions, just built on top of Fedora?

2. Can I still use PC with Amahi as a Linux PC? What are the restrictions?

3. I was planning to run my own Python-Flask based server with voice assistant, with web-based front-end. Are there any restrictions regarding Python 3.X in Amahi, or will I be able to install and use python and additional modules from pip, just like it works on Windows, Raspbian and clean Ubuntu\Fedora, for example?

I was also planning to write my own python music library, for example, and tie it to some music server, etcetc. Will I be able to connect to Amahi api with Python somehow?

So... will I really benefit from using Amahi, or will it be better for me to build my own server? Even if it takes longer... I guess it comes to similar things as buying a pre-built NAS vs building your own. So I'm already building my own, and should I really use Amahi? :) sorry for repeating and rephrasing myself.

Thanks!

Okay, answering my own questions..

Installed Amahi. Yes, it's still a working linux with desktop and all it's perks. So far so good... But there is now another problem, which is -  I don't really understand what Amahi is doing to my whole local network, and I'm not sure I really want it to mess with DHCP and stuff... But that's another question.

As for the answer to "Should I use Amahi or just install everything I need manually on a clean linux", so far it depends on the answer to that second question. Because I don't want it to do anything to my network, other than just sitting in it and acting as a server on some of my local IP's, which I can simply port-forward to if I need access from the outside, I don't need any fancy local host names and stuff...

But ill make anothe thread for that question.

EDIT:

Okay, seems so far I don't have to create another thread.

This is probably what I am looking for.

1. The main question comes to this: How does amahi "change" linux? Is it just a Fedora with server software pre installed? Or is it like a new OS with it's own benefits, limits and restrictions, just built on top of Fedora?
Amahi provides a web front end to Linux and enables specific features automatically like DHCP and DNS server, Samba sharing, etc. It's basically an add-on using Fedora packages.
2. Can I still use PC with Amahi as a Linux PC? What are the restrictions?
Yes except there is no desktop. Amahi is a headless server. Keep in mind if you modify certain aspects of the Amahi server, it could break things.
You can use whatever version of Python that Fedora 23 provides. Pip will work as well for installing modules.

The latest supported version of Amahi is Amahi 9 on Fedora 23. If you attempt to use anything else, support will be extremely limited. Also previous versions are in Maintenance Support status. That means there will be no application or Amahi updates. Typically the OS is already retired as well so there are no security updates for the older versions, leaving the server more susceptible and insecure.

Hopefully this answers your questions.

Thank you for reply! I've actually installed it and tested it, but all this brings me to a bit bigger thread. But if someone finds time to read and answer that, it would really help my case.

Here is the topic.

Ok, so we can mark this one as closed then.

I or my colleague will try to respond to your other post.

Most of the info you need should be in the Amahi FAQ though.
