DynDNS

Postby marcel » Fri Jul 31, 2009 10:30 pm

I know amahi comes with it's own dynamic dns service but is it possible to integrate a service like dyndns? It would be nice if you can choose your own domain. I know ebox have a similar setup. What are you thoughts?

I think amahi comes with openDNS.org.

what i mean is to use your own registered domain or sub-domain. You can do that with for example with dynDNS. They support dynamic ip addresses. Most home users have dynamic ip address (it changes all the time). You install a program on your server (ddclient) what reports ip address changes to DynDNS. So your domain stays accessible. So i request a feature which cooperates with a service such as DynDNS. I think its not so difficult because Amahi use the same technics i think.

yes, we do it on one domain (yourhda.com).

doing it on your own domain is a different deal. certainly this could not be done free.

let me ask directly: are you interested in paying a yearly subscription for this?

our bills are mounting as amahi grows, so we're looking for ways to generate some form of income.

if a number of people show interest, perhaps we can start working on it. it's a fair bit of work.

certainly i'am interested in such a service but under the terms that i can move the domain to a other server. i'am still floating between Windows, Amahi, Windows home server, Clarkconnect, Ebox, Ubuntu, Linux mint, Fedora and go on... I like Amahi a lot but all distro i've test are missing some things. I now a home sever is a whole new concept and it needs time to mature. Anyway that was a bit offtoppic. Yes i'am interested so long the price is reasonable and i can move the domain.

PS i forgot to mention mac OS X nice... expensive hardware

Edit: I think for a SOHO version of Amahi its essential to support own domains.

you own your domain. noone can prevent you from moving it.

if we can get 15 people committed to this feature, i think we could get started.

the "extra features" needed, like setting up mx, a records, etc. etc. is something that is needed while hosting DNS, so it's just not dynamic DNS. that takes more work than the dyndns.

I have never had a own domain before but can you explain what is needed? i always curious how something works. I know i have a dynamic ip adres and most home users have. That you have to install a program on your comuter to keep track of your ip address. Ddclient in case of Dyndns.

in amahi, the there is nothing to install update. comes up automatically.

explaining the whole thing would take too long (sorry).
search for dyndns or dns tutorials.

maybe we could have a feature bounty or some such thing.

actually it'd be more than 15 people that we'd need. i can tell you that it would be at least $90/month to maintain that feature (not factoring in the cost to develop), which means we'd need about 45 people signing up at an assumed $25/domain/year paid for the custom+dynamic dns. i wonder if we can do a poll or something.

Hmmm, 45 users that a lot for a small community. To find 45 people is difficult i think. How many server are running? I must say $25/year is a fair price. Clarkconnect also uses a price $25 dollar a year. I can make a post how many users are interested in this feature and than we can make a choice. Certainly for $25/year i'am in.
