Slightly confused on which version of Amahi to get

Postby PatrickDickey » Fri Aug 02, 2013 3:57 am

Hi everyone,

I'm planning on upgrading my Fedora 14-based version to the latest one. In one place, it says that the only "supported" version is Amahi 7, using the Express Disc. But, when I go to the main wiki pages (and posts in the forum), it says that Amahi 7 is still under development, and the supported versions are the Fedora 16/Ubuntu 12.04 LTS versions.

So, my questions are these:

1. Is Amahi 7 still under development, or has it been released?
2. Am I understanding correctly that Amahi 7 is Fedora 19 based, and the next release will be Ubuntu (14.04 or other LTS) based, or will you be releasing a version of Amahi 7 for Ubuntu?

I'm sure I'll have other questions, but these are good enough for now.

Have a great day, and thanks. :)
Patrick.

Can you provide wiki locations so we can ensure it gets updated?

It has been released. There are still some tweaks in progress, but nothing that prevents use for production. Recommend you follow these installation instructions.

That is correct, so far there is no plan to release Amahi 7 for the current 12.04.2 LTS version of Ubuntu. We hope to upgrade to the latest LTS with Amahi 7 when it's released.

I checked the one page (installation), and it's been updated already. I'll have to go through the rest and see if they're updated as well (I don't remember exactly which pages they were, so I'll have to go through my history to find them).

I have a couple more questions though. On the pages, it says that it will wipe the first hard drive, unless you choose something else. If you have two internal drives, how does it determine which is first? And in my case, where I have two (or three) internal drives, plus four USB drives, will it automatically add the other drives to the storage pool, or do I need to make sure I disconnect them (to not lose data)?

Thanks, and have a great day. :)
Patrick.

Drive order is determined by your BIOS typically. As with all versions of Amahi, it's best to disconnect all drives except the one you are going to use for the OS.

There is no automatic adding drives capability yet. We hope to have it in the future. For now, you will have to do them manually as in the past with hda-diskmount. Also Greyhole currently has no GUI, so setting it up and using it is all manual via the /etc/greyhole.conf file.

We are hoping to get something in the wiki soon to help outline the steps.

Ok, I am also in the same boat as the original poster, a touch confused, I am using a 32bit computer so which version should i get at this point as i believe Amahi 7 is only available for 64bit.

Should i be downloading a version of Fedora if so which version I read somewhere in the docs only version 14 was supported but the original poster mentioned Fedora 16.

Any help would be appreciated

I'm in this same boat also. My Amahi server is a homebuilt computer that's about 10 years old. So, I guess the question for both of us is this: Are there any manual installation instructions available? And are the repositories 64-bit only, or do you have the 32-bit repositories available?

Have a great day.:)
Patrick.

P.S. I'm glad you noticed this. I hadn't looked closely enough at the installation instructions yet, as I'm still moving files around.

There are plans for a 32-bit version of Amahi7 Express CD, but I do not know when. If you want to try Amahi, Ubuntu is the best version to use.

However if you want to upgrade to Amahi 7, I am afraid you will need to wait. There is no upgrade path from Fedora 14/Ubuntu to Amahi 7.

I will see if I can get a firm date and post as to when we anticipate the 32-bit version being available.

Good to hear. Enjoy and hope you can try Amahi 7 again. We will not be adding any apps or features to Ubuntu. Only apps on Amahi 7 will receive updates so it might be wise to try again down the road if you care about those things.

I also was confused about which version of Amahi to use. I decided Ubuntu supported more of the Apps I wanted to use.

I understand the next version of LTS Ubuntu is 14.04. Ubuntu 14.04 will be released around April 2014. From the blog post I understand that there will be no more Apps for Ubuntu. Will security updates for Amahi on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS be provided during the interim?

Thanks
