RESOLVED: second hard drive

I am trying to install a second hard drive on my amahi/ubuntu server but I am having difficulty opening a terminal as root to format and partition it but as ubuntu doesn't seem to ask for a root password during setup i have no idea how to do this adding a second drive with the older fedora system wasn't too difficult but I am a bit lost with ubuntu the version I am using is Ubuntu 12.04.2 could this be the cause of the problem should I be using 12.04.1 if so how should i obtain it

Thanks for the help M8, that's got me in, I think I might have got the syntax a little wrong

(update) second drive now working fine formatted and mounted Greyhole pool saw it first time
